Danette Lowman's Recovery After A Hit & Run

He took her foot and she identified him by his”.   Reaching out for the support of Danette Lowman during her life-altering road to recovery after a hit and run accident that has left her an amputee. She is an incredibly strong woman, who we know will face this journey with courage and grit, but at the moment she will need all the support, financially and with prayers, that we can give her. Please read on and share her powerful story.

On July 17th, 2020 the Lowmans were traveling home from their first date night out since quarantine. As they were about to turn left onto their street, a large vehicle that was speeding tried to drive around them and struck their motorcycle, knocking out the driver Kyle and leaving Danette with life-altering injuries. They were exactly 10 houses away from home.

The driver of the truck got out of the vehicle to see Kyle unconscious, and Danette severely injured on the road. The man proceeded to stand over Danette and ask “what do you need me to do”...Danette has said all she could see was his red vans. She could only stare at his shoes, knowing that her life was about to permanently change.  “I need you to call 911” she was able to say before the driver hopped in his truck and sped off, fleeing the scene of the accident and leaving her and Kyle completely alone on the road. They live off a street that has no sign or street lights, so Danette bravely dragged herself to the side of the road and screamed for help, praying another car would not come around the corner and strike Kyle.  Neighbors were able to hear her yells, as Kyle came to, and they all managed to call for help.

Due to the severity of her injuries, Danette was airlifted to the nearest trauma center. She has said that she could hear the medics talking about her mangled foot and the dire situation her leg was in. Danette said she knew that she wasn’t going to be able to keep her leg, even before the doctors let her know that amputation was imminent.

Once at the trauma center, Danette received three different surgeries. The first was to amputate her left foot and try to repair the separated skin on her calf and upper leg. Tragically, they were forced to remove more of her leg during the second surgery, where they had to amputate more, leaving a third of her lower left leg below the knee. The third surgery placed a rod in her femur, as it had shattered as a result of the accident.

Kyle has no recollection of that night, as a result of the severe concussion he suffered in the accident. He has a broken finger, thumb and will be having more tests on his legs as he is currently on a walker because of the swelling and injuries.

Danette is a warrior and blew away the doctors with her determination to walk while at the trauma center. They could not dim her spirit!

Both Danette and Kyle have been trying to make this new transition of seeing her mother in a wheelchair easier for their 11 year old daughter Braelyn.  Braelyn is strong and resilient like her mother, but this is something that no young girl should have to comprehend.

Danette has a long road to recovery in front of her, and the most important thing we can do is help her get readjusted to her new life. Their home is not set up for a handicap lifestyle, and it will be a daily struggle to manage her days in a wheelchair.  The cost and possibility of receiving a prosthetic are still a long way away.

It will be an arduous task to get her approved and set up for permanent disability due to her young age, and although she has medical insurance, the hospital bills, possible prosthetics, and new needs for making the home a safe, wheelchair friendly environment are overwhelming. Kyle and Danette can not face the journey alone.

As for the driver and his passenger who fled the accident, they have been apprehended thanks to Danette’s statements.  The deputies were able to identify the driver, who originally claimed somebody stole his vehicle, by his red vans sitting in his living room. Not only was Danette strong enough to cry for help, but she had the courage to remember the details of the accident and hopefully put this man behind bars.

She is “Lowman Strong” and we ask for everyone’s love and support to show her that she has a powerful tribe of people holding her up, loving her, and giving her the financial help she needs to recover, heal and face her new reality.
