Voices in ACTION: Dancing the Diaspora

We’re raising funds for our International Dance Festival in support of Grown Women Dance Collective!

Having grown up in poverty in San Francisco, GWDC's Artistic Director Tonya Marie Amos has experienced first-hand how structural racism and inequity have trapped many creative, driven, innovative people in a chasm of intergenerational poverty. Without solid access to education and well-paid employment opportunities, families are unstable, vulnerable, and unable to break this cycle.

Disinvested communities lack access to arts and wellness services, which improve quality of life and reduce physical and mental health disparities.  Her solution to catalyze community transformation is to create  The Comprehensive Pilates Post-Rehabilitation Certification & Joyful Movement Practitioner Training Program:  https://www.grownwomendance.org/training-and-certification

Did you know that Bay Area Pilates Instructors make $60,000-$100,000 per year?

The program will build better physical and emotional health, help financially vulnerable families stay rooted against gentrification, begin to amass wealth, and create a stronger sense of belonging, wholeness, neighborhood cohesion, and joy.  It will train and mentor residents from Bay Area disinvested neighborhoods to become audacious movement educators and leaders in their communities, utilizing principles of the arts and wellness to develop life-skills, financial stability, and self-empowerment. Often overlooked, rooted-in-community folks will earn an internationally recognized Pilates certification to build financial stability and bring arts, wellness, fitness, and pain prevention skills into their communities.

With an initial 10 students for the pilot program, neighborhoods will be flooded with 2000+ free classes and graduates will have the capacity to collectively earn $650,000+ in their first year after graduation. Subsequent programs will train 20 students per cohort; neighborhoods will be flooded with 4000+ free classes and graduates will have the capacity to collectively earn $1,300,000+ in salary the first year after graduation. Healthier families and communities will be able to leverage their collective power for good in their own lives, community and world.

To support this important project, Voices in Action is producing Dancing the Diaspora  on Saturday, January 23, 2021, at 7:30 pm pacific time.  This is the first performance in the Voices in Action International Dance Festival.  This online concert will feature remarkable dancers from Ghana, Rwanda, and Brazil, in addition to Amos’s own Grown Women Dance Collective  and other US-based groups.

In order to bring the work of these fabulous international groups to a huge, international audience, we need to make it possible for them to do their work. Each of the 20 dancers needs $200 to cover expenses like rehearsal space,  recording studio time, and costumes, in addition to essential living expenses like food and rent.

Thank you for your support! Together we will achieve these vital goals.
