Dana's Surgery Fundraiser

Donation protected
Hi all,

Thank you for visiting my fundraising page. My name is Dana (they/them) and I’m a 24 year old non-binary queer person living in the Boston area.

While I have known, and been open about, queerness in my sexuality for a long time, I only began examining queerness in my gender identity during college. Up until that point I had been told I was a girl and believed that to be indisputable. Learning about transgender identity allowed me to challenge that notion and realize myself as a non-binary individual.

This realization has been one of the most challenging, yet relieving experiences of my life. Moving through the world as a person who does not fit into the gender binary can feel treacherous, however the weight and dread of performing a role that does not fit who I am has been gradually subsiding over the past few years, and is slowly giving way to hopefulness.

Coming to this realization, accepting it, and taking steps to align my presentation with my sense of self have made living feel consistently worthwhile, possibly for the first time ever.

Top surgery is the next step for me in this process. This surgery will allow me to stop wearing binders (compression garments) that are harmful to my skin, muscles, and breathing, but one of the only reliable strategies for alleviating my dysphoria. Most importantly, this surgery will allow me to experience my body the way that I’ve always hoped I could, even before I knew what the word “dysphoria” meant.

I am fortunate to have my surgery scheduled for April 10th in Boston and I am fundraising to help offset the cost of surgery and after-care. Your donation will go towards a $3,500 cosmetic fee that insurance does not cover, bills that I receive after the procedure (only partially covered by insurance/includes the cost of anesthesia, lab work, and other fees), and the cost of recovery materials.

Additionally, I am using this fundraiser to make a contribution to two organizations that provide grants for individuals who do not have the funds to cover gender-affirming surgery (The Jim Collins Foundation and Point of Pride). I would like to donate $250 to each organization because I believe that gender-affirming treatment saves lives and that the trans community deserves better access to quality care.

One important note: please do not share this fundraiser on your social media page. I am being careful about the audience this reaches for my own comfort and safety.

Thank you so much for the support, it truly means the world to me.
