Hello! My name is Amy Wyness and I’ve decided to create this fundraiser to help support my parents, Dana and Kathy Anderson after a series of unfortunate critical medical events that my dad has endured in less than a month.
Not too many know, but on November 16th my dad was diagnosed with Colon Cancer of the Cecum. He was referred to a general surgeon for removal as it would be an uncomplicated procedure because his tumor (that measured 2.3x2.5cm) was in “the perfect location.” My parents met with the Surgeon, had required scans done, Cardiovascular clearance appointments and imaging done and everything looked great and he was cleared for surgery which took place on 01/29/23.
Surgery went well, it was done with the latest robotic technology and as the Surgeon stated, “there were no hiccups along the way. My dad was discharged the following evening on 01/30 and everything seemed ok. He had expected discomfort, abdominal fullness, some fatigue. Minimal diarrhea. This had been his first ever surgery so he didn’t know exactly what to or what not to expect exactly and his discharge papers were fairly vague.
By Wednesday morning he was vomiting. Nothing to warrant that anything was wrong and he assumed he caught some sort of bug from the hospital as he felt much better later that afternoon.
Thursday he still felt alittle “off” but much better than he had been, so everything looked to be going in the right direction.
Friday was the turning point. He was experiencing diarrhea again, but now it was frequent. Very frequent. My mom called his surgeons office and the nurse told her if he vomits, to take him to the ER. Well, no vomiting since Wednesday, just diarrhea now so my dad told her he was fine….. That’s until he wasn’t.
At 2:04am, Saturday morning my mom called me that my dad is being taken to the ER by ambulance. He collapsed in the bathroom because he “was weak and his feet were numb.”
After 5 hours in the ER, he was admitted to the ICU with Septic Shock, Acute Kidney failure, Respiratory failure, BP of 55/67 and multi organ decline. Unfortunately he was also admitted without any answers as to why this happened. His kidney function was so low, a CT without contrast was done and I quickly learned- no contrast, no point to even have a CT.
That afternoon an Emergent Dialysis Catheter was placed to begin treatment right away. (When he left the hospital on 1/30
his labs showed he had 99% kidney function- his first labs at the ER on 2/4 showed he was at 6%).
By 2pm that day, The Chief of Vascular surgery was called in for a Consult due to his legs being cold to the touch with mottled appearance. 0 pulse reading on feet/ankles. Minimal pulse everywhere else from his knees down. Since his BP was critically low, he was on vassopressors which were keeping him alive at that point, but also constricting blood flow in his legs. Vascular left us that afternoon with the possibility that he might be looking at “Life or limbs.”
My dad spent 10 days in the ICU fighting for his life, also meeting with Palliative Care, then the next day Hospice…. but on the 6th day in that ICU, he chose Life by getting a double leg amputation. Above the knee on his left leg, slightly below the knee on his right.
While he still has many more hurdles ahead (which includes the pathology report that staged him at Stage 3 with metastisized Carconoma), he moved out of the ICU on day 11 and will soon be moving to the inpatient Rehabilitation floor to begin to learn how to live again. This has been a long read and I thank you if you made it this far! Please say a prayer for my dad (and mom-she has to deal with him ) and if you are able to donate. They do not know Im doing this, but I want to make sure financial stress isn’t added to their journey as He has several upcoming expenses including, hospital bills, inpatient/outpatient rehab, the need for assistive devices (wheelchair, grab bars, ramp, etc.), and prosthetics. We are also needing to make several renovations to their home to make it safer, and allow him more independence in his new normal.
If you are unable to donate at this time, I completely understand! Please just continue to keep him in your thoughts and prayers as he embarks on this journey ♥️
