Dan's Journey to Health

Donation protected
On November 12, 2018 a seemingly innocent trip to the ER for stomach pain for Dan turned into a life changing domino effect of events that has forever changed my sister's family. Below is a brief synopsis of their ongoing 20 week nightmare which may come to a shock to many of you as this has not been discussed publicly yet.

My sister, Eve, and my 9 year old niece, Anna, brought Dan into the hospital after he had been complaining of belly pain for a few days. He was diagnosed with pancreatitis on a Monday. On Tuesday, he was moved into the ICU in multi-system organ failure and put on a ventilator. On Wednesday, he was beyond the scope of care of his current hospital and airlifted by helicopter to Henry Ford Downtown where his condition continued to deteriorate to an hour-to-hour waiting game. Against the odds, he managed to pull through but remained on the ventilator for almost two weeks fighting. He came off the ventilator for a few days and then due to setbacks went on it again for almost 2 additional weeks. He remained in the ICU for 7 weeks before being released to a nursing facility to begin physical and occupational therapy.

As seems to be the constant with Dan, his scenario remained difficult and his recovery process was hindered by numerous infections and multiple setbacks. After another hospital stay, Dan finally came home to the delight of Eve and Anna, but after a brief, days long, bittersweet reunion, including 2 emergency room visits, Dan was again hospitalized and again transferred back downtown to Henry Ford. Most recently during a two week ICU stay, Dan had severe bowel complications that led to an emergency, life-saving surgery on March 30 which was, to quote the surgeon, "very rocky and much more difficult than I imagined." Dan is currently still in the ICU doing what he does best right now; fighting this illness that has ravaged his body.

My sister has been a ROCKSTAR through all of this and is such a fixture at the hospital, that the staff knows her better than Dan! She does not qualify for FMLA nor have any time built up because 3 months before Dan becoming ill, she made a career change from an almost 20 year position to a position closer to home. In a sardonic twist of fate, Dan got sick and all of the time she had accrued in two decades was no longer available when she needed it most. She has to take time off for all of the emergency phone calls (there have been many), doctor's appointments, and anything else that comes up and it is all unpaid. Dan was working but will not be able to for the foreseeable future while he is recovering and his recovery will be a long one.  As you can imagine, the medical bills have been pouring in and will continue to mount.

Eve is very strong and very proud. She never wants to ask for help, but she cannot do this alone. Anna just wants her Daddy home. Its hard for a little girl to understand why he's been gone so long and she cannot visit him in the ICU. For much of the time, she couldn't even facetime because he was in such critical condition or unable to talk due to the ventilator. Her whole world has changed and she has had to think about things that no child should. This family has been dealt a devastating blow and I will do anything I can to help them overcome this, hopefully with your help.

This Go Fund Me will go directly to Eve to pay for medical bills and to help them continue to move forward with Dan's Journey to Health. So very many things have gone wrong in these past 5 months, I'm hopeful that this will be something positive and push away the black cloud that has been hovering. If you cannot donate, please send Eve, Anna and Dan your positive thoughts or messages. They need all of the support they can get right now. Thank you for your consideration!
