Dan Trexler’s Fight Against Brain Cancer

My baby brother, Dan, is one of the strongest and most courageous people I know and he needs our help in the fight for his life against an aggressive, cancerous brain tumor! (日本語訳は一番下にあります。スクロールダウンしてください。)

Dan is a loving and devoted husband and father of two young boys and is in the prime of his life at the age of 37. He is a great friend and family member and is loved by so many. Before his brain tumor got worse, he was actively involved in the Japanese martial art of Naginata where he is 3rd dan (rank) and was an assistant instructor at his dojo in Southern California.  (Check out the photos and videos below.)

Dan had his third brain surgery on September 18th and hasn’t been able to work since his last surgery in May. As you can imagine, it has been difficult for his wife, Tamaki, to look for a job with all the doctor’s appointments, Dan’s aphasia (“loss of ability to understand or express speech, caused by brain damage”), lack of help with daily family/household responsibilities (her parents live in Japan and my parents are in Arizona), the kids being home all day doing school virtually, and, of course, all the uncertainties with what the future holds.

The stress of how they are going to pay their medical bills, much less their regular living expenses, is the last thing they need to worry about right now. Their bill for Dan’s last surgery and hospitalization back in May was for $7,000 and their $13,000 mortgage is due soon as well. They are trying to see if any special arrangements can be made but there’s no guarantee. There will, of course, also be large bills for his latest surgery and, on top of all that, they don’t know if his disability pay will cover all their regular household expenses.

Our $25,000 goal will cover the $7,000 medical bill, the $13,000 mortgage payment, and the additional $5,000 will go towards their continued medical bills and regular living expenses.

We know that finances are tight for many people right now, so any amount you can give is so greatly appreciated! Together we can help ease the Trexlers’ financial burden so Dan can focus entirely on defeating this nasty cancer once and for all!

P.S. here is a brief history of Dan’s journey for anyone who is interested:

· November 2015: Dan’s first seizure leading to the discovery of his brain tumor

· Summer 2017: doctors noticed a significant growth in the tumor, and Dan started showing symptoms like headaches, aura, and focal seizures (his tumor is on the left side, directly on the language center, so when he starts getting aura, he mixes up words to the point where he is completely incomprehensible)

· October 2017: Biopsy surgery and official diagnosis of grade 3 glioma; followed by a gran mal seizure and renal failure

· November 2017: Radiation and chemo started

· Early 2018: MRI showed that his tumor shrunk, so after that he just had to meet with doctors in 3, then 6, month intervals

· Early 2020: Dan started showing slight symptoms (headaches and stuttering, which was really not that noticeable and different from previous symptoms) and they started to become more pronounced around the time of the covid19 closure. By the beginning of May, the tumor had grown bigger and the radio oncologist told him that radiation alone could not do anything. He was then referred to a neurosurgeon (the same doctor who did the biopsy) who decided to operate right away.

· May 2020: Resection surgery (“removing part or all of a tissue, structure, or organ”), implanted chemo, and an updated diagnosis of a grade 4 glioblastoma multiforme. The surgery impacted his speech, memory, and mathematical skills, and left him with weakness in the right side of his body. This summer, Dan had been doing physical, occupational, and speech therapy.

· Early August 2020: MRI showed that the glioblastoma had grown, despite the implanted and oral chemo. The most promising medical option at this point was to go on a clinical trial at UCLA, which would involve another risky surgery.

· Mid-August 2020: Seizure and hospitalization which made him miss his spot on the clinical trial

· September 2020: Dan’s latest MRI shows the cancers is aggressive and changing so the doctors wanted to do surgery quickly. Dan had surgery on Friday, September 18th and is still recovering at UCLA Medical Center.

私が愛する心優しく勇敢であるダンがとても凶悪な癌性脳腫瘍という病気と戦っていて
多くの助けを必要としています。

ダンは愛情深くとても献身な夫であり、二人の息子の父であり37歳という人生で最も
輝かしい時期にいます。 ダンは親友でもあり、家族でもありそして多くの人々に愛されています。

ダンは9月18日に3回目の脳外科手術を、そして5月に再度手術を受けて以来仕事をする事が出来なくなってしまいました。皆さんがご想像される通り妻の環さんは医師とのやり取り、ダンの失語症（脳の損傷による話の理解や表現能力の喪失）、抱えきれないやらなければいけない事に仕事する事が困難になっていきました。日々抱える家庭への責任（彼女の両親は日本に住んでいて、ダンの両親はアリゾナにいます）子供たちは学校に通く事さえ出来なくなってしまってます。そして将来どうなってしまうのかという不安に胸が絞めつけられています。

彼らが医療費をどのように支払うかという不安は通常の生活費よりもはるかに少なく、彼らがもっとも心配する事です。 5月に戻ったダンの最後の手術と入院の請求額は7,000ドルで、13,000ドルの住宅ローンも直ぐに支払われます。彼らは特別な手配ができるかどうかを確認しようとはしていますが、保証などありません。もちろんダンの手術には多額の請求書があり、それに加え、彼の障害者手当がすべての通常の家計費をカバー出来るかどうかは勿論わかりません。

私たちの25,000ドルの目標は、7,000ドルの医療費、13,000ドルの住宅ローンの支払いを助け、追加の5,000ドルは継続的な医療費と通常の生活費に充てられます。

P.S.興味のある人のためのダンの旅の簡単な歴史は次のとおりです。

・2015年11月：彼の脳腫瘍の発見につながるダンの最初の発作

・2017年夏：医師は腫瘍の著しい成長に気づき、ダンは頭痛、癲癇、部分発作などの症状を示し始めました（彼の腫瘍は左側にあり、言語センターに直接あるため、癲癇を始めると言葉を理解する事が困難になります）

・2017年10月：生検手術とグレード3の神経膠腫の公式診断。その後、大発作と腎不全が続く

・2017年11月：放射線療法と化学療法が開始

・2018年初頭：MRIは腫瘍が縮小したことを示したため、初めは3か月、その後は半年の間隔で医師と面会する事になりました。

・2020年初頭：ダンはわずかな症状（頭痛や吃音、以前の症状とは異なる）を示し始め、covid19が少し落ち着いたと思われた頃さらに悪化し始めました。 5月の初めには腫瘍は大きくなり、放射線腫瘍医には放射線だけでは治療する事は出来ないと言われました。その後すぐに手術を行うことを決め脳神経外科医（生検を行ったのと同じ医師）を紹介されました。

・2020年5月：切除手術（組織、構造、または臓器の一部または全部の除去）、移植された化学療法、およびグレード4の多形性膠芽腫の最新の診断。手術は彼の会話力、記憶、数学のスキルに影響を与え、体の右側に麻痺を残しました。この夏ダンは理学療法、作業療法、言語療法を行っていました。

・2020年8月初旬：MRIは、移植および経口化学療法にもかかわらず、膠芽腫が成長したことを示しました。この時点で最も有望な医療オプションは、UCLAで臨床試験を行うことでした。これには、別の危険な手術が含まれます。

・2020年8月中旬：発作と入院により、彼は臨床試験を逃しました

・2020年9月：ダンの最新のMRIは、癌が脅威的で変化していることを示している為医師は迅速に手術を行いたいと考えていました。ダンは9月18日金曜日に手術を受け、UCLAメディカルセンターでまだ回復中です。
