Dear friends and family: I never thought I'd have to do this, and it makes me swallow my pride, but we need help. My loving and amazing husband has just (7/19/2020) been diagnosed with stage 4 cancer and an advanced bowel obstruction. We had a lot of assets at one time, but the past couple of years, especially the past 10 months, have been brutal. In the past 3 years, I've had both knees replaced, then back surgery last year. A couple of years ago, Dan had a heart attack, then a long recovery. Last September he had a disc rupture in his low back. He had surgery and had a cage put in. The surgery wasn't done until almost a month later because of the insurance company holding it up. Dan needed a 3 month recovery. Just about the time he was going back to work, Covid-19 came about. We own our own home remodeling business, so hardly anyone wanted him in their home to work, though several allowed him in. We have been 10 months with very little income. With medical bills still out there from his back, and now a long road of no work ahead, I have to put shame aside and ask for help. We are very grateful to have a wonderful network of people around us, something we don't take for granted. If you are able to help, you have our great appreciation. If you cannot help monetarily, please just hold our family in your prayers and heart, because this helps too and we are grateful for that as well. To tell his recent story in a nutshell: Dan hadn't been feeling well after eating for the past month or so. We thought maybe it was a food allergy and began to try and nail down the suspect. None of the usual suspects...stopping them...provided any answers or change. . Saturday he did not feel well, and after dinner, his face was squished in pain. I wanted to take him to the ER. He took antacids instead. I could see his horrible pain. We went to bed around midnight, he started vomiting almost immediately. At 130, he was leaned over the bathroom sink, cold and sweaty to the touch, though he felt hot. I could see his face in the mirror. I said we are going to ER now. He didn't argue this time. I couldn't go in, but bloodwork didn't look good. CT scan next. It showed many growths, colon and other places. Disturbing bc he had a clear colonoscopy 8 months ago. NG tube being placed now. Biopsy today. So far: aggressive, advanced stage cancer and advanced bowel obstruction. I am being allowed to see him in his room. He is currently being treated by the University of Minnesota. The monetary goal I am setting is high, the bills will be much greater. Thank you. Kathy and Dan Roth ** Update: Dan had surgery on 7/23. 29 inches of his small bowel and colon were removed. Doctors are still unsure about the origin of his cancer, so a scope procedure will be done to see if that determination can be made. That will help the oncologist to determine the exact course of action regarding the chemotherapy. This cancer is aggressive and advanced. He has many nodes and tumors inside and it is already in the lymph nodes. Chemo is terribly expensive, and even with health insurance, this is going to be a terrible burden. If you are able to help us, we thank you from the bottom of our hearts.
