Dan McGee Needs Your Help to Recover
Donation protected
On April 23, Dan McGee—beloved father, friend and musician — collapsed from a brain aneurysm, which flooded the space around his brain (a subarachnoid hemorrhage). Friends rushed him to UNC Hospitals, where an expert neurosurgery team threaded a tiny platinum coil into the aneurysm and sealed the bleed, saving his life.
He is still not out of the woods and a long fight still lies ahead.
He will be in the Neuro‑ICU until at least May 7 to watch for a complication called cerebral vasospasm as they clear the blood from his brain.
During this time he is at risk of stroke.
Another major brain surgery is coming in late May. After that, he faces a long road of rehab—learning to walk steadily again, rebuilding his stamina. It will be months before he’s able to get back to work and back on stage.
And here’s the tough part: like many working musicians, Dan didn’t have active health insurance when this hit. Even with hospital support and charity discounts, his medical and living expenses are projected to reach $75,000–$100,000. Dan will be in the hospital until June, then he will be an outpatient for several months. Meanwhile, medical bills are adding up and it could be 6 months before he is able to get back to work.
We’re raising money to help cover those costs—and to give Dan the time and care he needs to heal fully.
You can make a real difference for Dan and the people he loves, especially his daughters - they are everything to him. And his girls love him deeply and they need him back. Cordon, his former partner and mother of his children, has been an anchor for him in these early days and is caring for their girls as they wait and hope
We are all so grateful to his friends who got him to the hospital, and the quick response of the medical teams who diagnosed him and saved his life.
He is lucky to be alive.
Most of all, we are grateful for that.
We are grateful for all the songs he has yet to write, for all the laughs he has yet to inspire, for all the kindness, joy, and connection he brings to the world through his music. We love him so.
From the bottom of our hearts: THANK YOU. Your support, your messages, your thoughts and well-wishes—they’re holding us up right now.
And please be sure to share this link with anyone and everyone!
Love,
The McGee Family
