Dan Langhoff Science Garden Legacy
On Tuesday, July 26th, Dan Langhoff left this biosphere (earth) way too soon. He will be sorely missed by ALL and can never be replaced. He was not your ordinary science teacher and was beloved by his middle school science students, colleagues, friends, and family. He could identify any bird flying in the sky, by sight or sound, while repeating its scientific binomial Latin name with a huge smile on his face. Dan was an amazing science teacher that burned with a passion for birds, plants, the environment, gardening, and most of ALL, his science students. He would go to great lengths to build relationships with his student in and outside the classroom. On top of constructing engaging science lessons, he loved to dress up in full costume and play the air guitar while lip-syncing in front of the whole school. He would practice for months, and when he performed, the students absolutely loved it. His students knew that Dan cared about them having a fun experience out at lunch in the science classroom, and because they knew he cared, they always put in extra effort to reach their full potential.
Last Spring, under the inspiration of Dan Langhoff, the science department started the first phase of the science garden, where students constructed multiple raised garden beds to grow fresh organic produce. The students absolutely loved it and would constantly ask to work in the science garden whenever they could.
Dan was a personal friend and an amazing colleague. In honor of Dan Langhoff, we will be dedicating and naming the science garden in his memory. I am personally raising funds to continue Dan's vision of developing an exemplary, world-class school garden program. The science garden will be the focal point of the science wing, creating opportunities for students to grow food, study biology/ecology in the garden, become environmental stewards, learn leadership/responsibility, and foster positive relationships among students, staff, parents, and the community.
The Dan Langhoff Science Garden will be an on-campus space for students and staff to relax and rejuvenate in a beautiful and quiet environment, away from the fast pace of middle school life, while enjoying the garden and its inhabitants (birds, butterflies, and insects). We will be adding a plaque to the entrance of the garden this week that reads:
“In memory of Dan Langhoff, beloved teacher 2007-2022. This garden is dedicated to the caring and passion he had for all of his students. May this garden grow and prosper like all of his students.”
I would be honored if you would consider donating to the Dan Langhoff Science Garden Legacy Project. Any amount would be greatly appreciated. Please don’t forget to write a message about how this unique and amazing science teacher has impacted your life.
Thank you so much for ALL your love, care, and generosity. As Dan would say, “Langhoff Out!”
(All funds will be donated to the school and go towards future projects in the science garden like small garden fencing, shade coverings, tables, benches, walkway pavers, irrigation, native plants, gardening tools, wheelbarrow, hoses, small storage sheds for tools, etc.).
