On the evening of Oct. 6th Dan Passen’s business equipment for Xpress Timing was wiped out by rising flood waters from more than a foot of rain that hit Pelham, Alabama. Despite Dan and Pam's quick efforts to move the timing equipment higher in the house, the rapidly rising water quickly overtook their offices, vans, and trailers. Before it was all over more that 5 feet of water came in the house and wiped out their business.
For more than a decade Dan and his crew at Express Timing have worked tirelessly to transform the way cross country, indoor, and outdoor meets are timed and results are posted. Before Dan became involved in the Alabama track community meets were often timed by hand with results posted long after the event was over. At times errors would cause results to be lost and it was challenging for coaches and athletes to have the performance data they needed to improve performance.
Through investment and adaptation of technology Dan has been providing athletes, coaches, and their parents instant splits, placing, and results with real time web-based posting. Dan and his team are a recognized presence at high school and college meets across the state and the southeast. During indoor season they practically live at the CrossPlex.
During the past 10 years Dan has continually reinvested into Xpress Timing to provide the track community with timing chips, score boards, live mobile results, and live splits.
But more than equipment, Dan has been a reliable and friendly face for the entire track and field community. He’s usually one of the first to arrive at the meet and the last to leave
Running Out of Time
In addition to his personal losses Dan is now working desperately to provide timing and results to more than 30 cross country meets in the next 30 days. While Dan had insurance on the house and business, he was not able to buy flood insurance because his home is not in a flood plane. Insurance will not provide money for any of the timing equipment, office, or personal items damaged by the water. Dan and Xpress timing are now in a sprint to replace equipment that took a decade to build in less than a week.
The track and cross country community in Alabama has always been close knit. From the days of shivering in the "barn" for indoor to enjoying the world class facilities we have now the weekends shared at meets have always kept us close. With thousands of athletes, coaches, and officials across the state and the southeast we can do the impossible and help Xpress Timing get back to work providing the amazing service we have all come to count on.
What We Need
We need to replace 3 vans and trailers, results boards, timing cameras and chips, and computers in addition to the back office supplies. Our goal of $125,000 will be a good start in helping Dan serve the meets he has already committed to. Any funds raised above the goal will go to additional replacement cost for the business and house that are not covered by insurance. While Dan and Pam are determined to rebuild this on their own, it was only at the insistence of their family that they agreed to let us create this Go-Fund-Me. We know with the support of the track and field community we can get them back on their feet as soon as possible.
Go Fund Me Requirements
My name is Patty Landry and I am Dan's sister-in-law. These funds will be provided to Dan and Pam Passen to help them rebuild their business and home in Pelham Alabama.
