Damali's Capstone Film Project

I'm making a documentary film about truth, reconciliation, and reparations in the United States and the Caribbean. I'm raising money to get my film project started. This film is a capstone project for my master's program. I am planning to begin production this year and complete the film by summer 2023. Background

In 2021, I started an MA program in Social Justice and Community Organizing at Prescott College. It has been eye-opening and energizing. It has taken me back to my roots as a student activist and organizer and given me new direction. In the last several years, I have become more convinced that the United States would benefit from a truth and reconciliation process. I also think Caribbean nations like Jamaica would benefit from reparations. In both regions, activists, organizers, scholars, and everyday citizens have been working on these issues. I would like to spend time interviewing the people who are already in the trenches, organizing to make these ideas a reality. This film plans to create a powerful case for truth, reconciliation, and reparations through conversations with and stories about the people who are most invested in this work. The project will aim to reach as many viewers as possible around the world and include bold calls to action.

Status of the Project

I'm at the very beginning stages of the project. I've written up a project plan, have been talking with community members, and am forming an advisory board. I'd like to be able to pay a videographer and editor. I'd also like to cover essential costs like audio-visual equipment (camera, mic, lighting etc...) and offer an honorarium to anyone who appears in the film. This funding would make that all possible.
