Dear Friend of Law Enforcement,
On May 6th, 2017, our cycling team of law enforcement officers from California will ride nearly 1,800 miles, starting in downtown Dallas, Texas and riding to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington D.C. to pay our respects and represent California Law Enforcement to those assembled for the annual memorial in our Nation’s Capital.
Our team of active duty law enforcement officers represent the San Diego Police Department, Escondido Police Department, Los Angeles Police Department, Los Angeles World Airport Police Department and more agencies are joining as you read this.
We will depart Dallas on May 6 after a wreath-laying ceremony to honor the five Dallas officers killed in the line of duty on July 7th, 2016 and continue our memorial ride to Baton Rouge, Louisiana to honor their three officers who were killed on duty July 17th, 2016.
Then for six days, we will ride across the southeast and then north, where we will be joined by law enforcement officers and paying our respects to those fallen officers in jurisdictions along the way, until reaching our goal at the National Law Enforcement Memorial in Washington D.C. on May 12th, where the journey concludes with another wreath-laying ceremony at the annual event.
Finally, on May 13th we will join more than 50,000 friends, family and supporters of American Law Enforcement Officers killed in the line of duty to be recognized at the National Law Enforcement Memorial Candlelight Vigil ceremony. During the ceremony, the names of every officer who died in the line of duty in 2016 (a staggering 139 of them) will be read and their names officially and forever etched in granite on the Memorial, joining the tragic list of more than 20,000 fallen heroes of our nation. Sadly, one of those names to be added in this year’s ceremony is our very own Officer Jonathan DeGuzman, of the San Diego Police Department, who was killed in the line of duty on July 28th, 2016, marking July of 2016 one of the deadliest months for law enforcement in years.
Our team’s goal for this memorial ride is two-fold; to raise awareness and remembrance for the gallant men and women in America’s law enforcement who gave their lives in 2016 and to pay special honor to their families, especially their children, to show them they are part of a much larger family and to ease their heartache by honoring their sacrifices. Our second goal is to raise funds and awareness for the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund and the families it serves.
It is through your gracious support and contribution that I will be able to join the California team in this incredible endeavor and ride across our country, to take part and bare the pain of more than 1,750 miles, that our nation’s heroes, who paid the ultimate sacrifice in our honor are never forgotten and their families’ hearts lifted.
2016 saw unprecedented attacks on our nation’s law enforcement. It was a year of uncommon valor punctuated by pure senselessness. Yet through these tragedies one thing remains indelibly true; our nation and its people are exceptional and one thing I look forward to more than anything at the prospect of making this trip, is meeting so many amazing people along the way that have our backs and stand firmly with us in the gap between good and evil. There is far more good in this world than evil, I firmly believe that and I cannot wait to meet and extend my gratitude to so many for trusting and bestowing me…us…with the immeasurable honor of serving them.
Those who know me can attest; I would rather walk through fire before I would ever ask for anything. This is one time where I would humbly ask for your financial support to allow me this honor, to ride for you in this incredible and deserving cause. Each rider must raise approximately $2,100 to participate in the Memorial Ride, which covers support, ground transportation, overnight lodging (think 4 to a room) and minimal food while on the road for six days. In addition, each rider will make a donation to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund, which helps so many families in need.
Your donations are tax deductible (Tax ID# 95-2159522, The Eagle & Badge Foundation 501(c)(3) 1308 W 8th St, Los Angeles CA 90017).
All donations can be submitted through this site, or, if you are not concerned with the tax deduction, you may also send a check to me at PO Box 2307 Vista, CA 92085. Checks should be made payable to Damian Jackson. It would be helpful if your donation is received prior to March 15, 2017.
I sincerely thank you in advance, for your consideration in supporting our team in the Memorial Ride.
