The crash occurred on a Sunday night around 9pm Dakota Knott, 17, was identified as the victim of the fatality Monday by PPD.

It happened around 9 p.m. Saturday. Police tell Channel 3 News that the car crashed through a fence, and ended up in the water on the south end of the property. Andrew Brazell, a Marine Corps student at NAS Pensacola, was on a run near the scene when he heard the commotion. "I heard a bunch of screaming and I heard some banging, and I looked up and saw the car was kind of ping-ponging off of the rail right here as well as the wall...bouncing. I saw a bunch of sparks and heard it banging and stuff," said Brazell. "I heard the passengers screaming at the driver, like 'dude, stop!' and a whole bunch of expletives."

Brazell said he then ran after the car, and dove into the water. "I saw two kids coming out, helped them up to the top, helped them get to the barrier, asked how many people were in the car. They said there was only one left. I asked if they were hurt. They said they were fine. They didn't look like they had any broken limbs or bleeding or anything, so I took them to the edge and told them to stay there."

After trying to surface dive to the vehicle, Brazell said he discovered it was too deep. He said he climbed out of the water and dove back in, and was able to reach the car. Because it was dark and the car was upside down, Brazell said he was too disoriented to find the third person. After running out of air, he climbed out of the water to dive down to the car again.

"I got to the top, was climbing out to dive off, and the lights went off, and the humming, some electric motor, was still running. It went out and I knew I wouldn't be able to orient on it," Brazell said.

Brazell said that's when two Pensacola Police officers arrived prepared to go into the water to help, but because of the depth and darkness they weren't able to find the car. Brazell said about two minutes had passed at that point.

Pensacola Police tell us its Investigations Division, Traffic Homicide Investigations, and Crime Scene units responded to the scene. The Escambia County dive team and Pensacola Fire Department also assisted.

PPD will need to conduct an autopsy and toxicology report to determine the cause of death and if alcohol was involved in the fatality.
