Daisy’s Liver Diagnosis and Surgery

In the 6 years that we, and many of you, have known Daisy, it’s been clear that she is better than any of us could ever hope to be. When Daisy came to us, we didn’t expect she’d be staying, we just wanted to help out a friend in need. When her owner suddenly passed away after a short hospitalization, there was no way we could let her go anywhere else; she was already in our hearts. Since then, as many of you know, it's been quite a journey - through skin and food sensitivities, to her bonnet days for her hematomas, Daisy has been a trooper as we've gotten her on track to living her very best life.

We need help to keep her on that path. Daisy began experiencing symptoms late last week of stomach upset and low appetite. She was otherwise in decent spirits but on Wednesday she struggled with making it outside to use the bathroom, and we knew she was telling us something was very wrong.

That afternoon, the vet discovered fluid in her abdomen with an x-ray, which is likely what caused her noticeable symptoms. Upon referral for an ultrasound to better see beyond the fluid, a large mass was found on Daisy’s liver, which the vet believes to be cancerous and malignant. At this time, they recommend a diagnostic CT scan which will tell them if this mass is operable. This is scheduled for Friday at 11:00 am.  We've received an estimate for this scan which will cost $2000. If they discover that surgery is an option, they believe that her post-op prognosis will be very good; available research suggests that Daisy could survive surgery that removes the mass and lobes of her liver and live happily, healthily, and normally for years after.

An early estimate from the vet indicates that surgery could cost up to $4,000. If surgery or other intervention is not possible for this condition, we will have a short time before we say goodbye to our sweet Derz. We've weighed the options and we believe that if surgery is possible, and will not diminish but enhance the long term quality of life, and that those additional years truly allow her to be present with us, not for us, then we want to give her that chance. However, we simply cannot afford to do this on our own. The x-ray, ultrasound, and medications we've already received total $1000, and we want to afford any post operative care that she will need as well.

We will keep updating our gofundme page about Daisy's progress including the results of the CT Scan. She has responded well to some comfort meds she started yesterday, including eating full meals and getting excited to go outside and meet other pups.

All who meet Daisy know that she’s a special pup with a big heart and a gentle spirit. We want to do everything that we can for her to stay here bringing joy to people and not allow cost to be a factor. We hope that those who know and love her, and those who have loved a pup of their own, whether you saved them or they saved you, will be willing to offset these costs and give Daisy her life after the mass.
