Hello everyone, With heavy hearts we announce the passing of our dear Daisy. Diana “Daisy” Gunhammer passed away suddenly the evening of October 7th, 2023. She will be dearly missed by friends and family, and by the tribal and faith communities. While Daisy may have been a shorty, she had a large stature in our community, and some might even say she was a pillar of the community. For sure, she was well known and loved by hundreds and was recognized by and greeting by many more. She made a huge impact on the lives and faith of those lucky enough to know and love her. Daisy was truly an angel on this Earth, with an unshakable love for Jesus, and that love extended to pretty much everyone she knew. To know Daisy was to be greeted with a smile that would light every room and a warmth so genuine you couldn’t help but want to hug her. In her presence you always knew you mattered, even if you were a total stranger, you were seen and loved in Daisy’s presence. People greeted her wherever she went, and made time to visit with her. While going through the motions of dealing with this tragic loss and preparing for her services, because she is a CSKT descendant, but not a tribal member here, and her tribe of enrollment, at Rosebud, offers a less substantial burial benefit, we have found that Daisy’s funeral budget only comes to about $4,400, which unfortunately will barely cover a casket, and some, but not all, of the basics families are accustomed to having for a traditional 3-day wake and funeral service provided by Fosters. It definitely won’t cover a headstone, candles, cards, and other items families are accustomed to receiving to help the manage their grief in the long term… hence the purpose of this fundraiser. As her family members, and also the providers of some of her services, Day Program and Companion Services, administrators at Renee’s Helping Hands are more than happy to cover every expense we possibly can to give Daisy the send off she truly deserves, and we have donated several hundred dollars and lots of time to the cause already, but because we have such a small business (only 4 clients, to this point, and 6 staff) we do not have a lot of excess in our budget, or much padding for emergencies. We do have some cash on hand in savings, to pay for our payroll taxes, but it’s not disposable income. Morally and ethically, we feel compelled to assist, but realistically our small company does not have financial resources to cover more expenses without assurance of reimbursement. So we decided to start a fundraiser. However, it has been suggested to us, by our bookkeeper Shayna, who used to fundraise through her own nonprofit for people in the community, that funds raised through fundraisers are not immediately available to family to cover expenses, but are guaranteed, so we have pledged to access the cash in savings up to the value of any funds the community raises through this fundraiser, and make those funds immediately available to the family for payment of funeral costs, and wait for Go-Fund-Me to reimburse those funds to our account in time, which will not impact our bottom line, and will give them immediate access to the funds they need to cover funeral expenses. With this fundraiser we hope to raise the funds needed to give Daisy the funeral that she deserves. We know that she has touched the lives of many, so we ask, in lieu of flowers, please send help to Agnes, Dakota, Ashley and John, so that they might lay her to rest in the manner they hope to, and mark her passing with a nice headstone.
