Pet Patrol is a volunteer-run, non-profit cat rescue organization in the Kitchener-Waterloo area. Usually, in the early months of the year, when our vet visits the sanctuary for routine checkups and vaccinations, we have a long list of cats needing dental care. But this year is different. Instead, we now have at least six cats in urgent need of eye treatment. Some need surgery to remove an eye that cannot be saved, while others, like Daffodil, require delicate procedures to relieve discomfort and restore vision.

Hi, I’m Daffodil. I don’t remember much about where I came from—just that my brother and I were alone, scrambling through a ditch, trying to find somewhere warm, dry and safe. The world was big and scary, and everything around us seemed too loud, too cold, and too uncertain. Then, a kind truck driver stopped his big truck, scooped us up, and held us close.

At first, he thought we were just barn kittens that had wandered too far, but when he brought us to a nearby farm, the people there didn’t want us. We had nowhere to go. But the truck driver wouldn’t leave us behind. Instead, he brought us to a kind woman who rescues cats, and for the first time, we had everything we needed and someone to care about us.

But something wasn’t right. My left eye always felt strange, like there was something pulling at it. No matter how much I blinked or rubbed it, it never felt normal and I couldn’t see properly out of it. When Pet Patrol took me to the vet, they finally figured out why—my third eyelid is attached to my upper lid, making my eye feel uncomfortable all the time. I need surgery to fix it so I can feel better and finally see the world the way I’m meant to.
