My son's medical emergency has left our family facing immense challenges. Delores Perkins has always done her best to provide for her son Daejhon and give him a happy childhood, even as a single mother living in Cumberland County, New Jersey.
Daejhon, 27, had been looking forward to a fun getaway with a few family members in sunny California. After a long winter, he was excited for the change of scenery out west. However, his trip quickly took a frightening turn.
Just a few days after arriving in Los Angeles, Daejhon began feeling sharp pains in his chest. At first he tried to ignore it, not wanting to cut his vacation short. But the discomfort only grew worse over the following evening. By morning, the pain had become unbearable.
Knowing something was seriously wrong, Daejhon’s cousins rushed him to the emergency room at the prestigious Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. Doctors ran a battery of tests, trying to determine the cause of his symptoms. The results of an EKG and chest x-ray revealed the troubling diagnosis - Daejhon was in the midst of a heart attack.
Further examination using an echocardiogram showed that Daejhon had suffered a tear in the wall of his left ventricle, one of the heart's main pumping chambers. Without immediate surgical repair, the tear would continue to worsen and likely prove fatal. Daejhon was informed he needed emergency open-heart surgery.
His Father Mark was contacted and given the grim news. Though he lived over 2,000 miles away, Mark booked the first flight out to be by his son's side. He prayed the whole journey that he wouldn't be too late. Thankfully, Daejhon made it through the high-risk operation.
In the following days, Daejhon slowly regained consciousness in the ICU. Mark was overjoyed to see his boy awake and alert once more. However, the cardiothoracic surgeon warned that Daejhon still had a long road to recovery ahead of him. His heart needed extensive time to heal after such an traumatic injury.
The doctor informed them that Daejhon would need to stay in California for at least a month of continued monitoring and physical therapy, to ensure no complications arose from the surgery. But returning to New Jersey so soon after such major heart repair carried its own risks as well.
Delores' heart sank as the financial implications of this news set in. With no family or support system in California, she couldn't care for Daejhon during his recovery. And paying for a hotel for a month, daily meals, follow up medical bills, and flights back and forth was completely out of reach on her meager income.
Back in New Jersey, bills were already piling up from Daejhon’s initial hospital stay. She had already drained her savings account just to be by his side during the operation. Without assistance, Delores didn't know how she could afford to get her son the aftercare he needed to fully heal.
Delores didn't want Daejhon worrying about costs on top of focusing on regaining his health. But the thought of sending him back to New Jersey too soon was terrifying as well. She knew she needed to find a way to keep Daejhon in California until he was given the all clear by his doctors.
Her son had come so close to losing his life already. Delores was determined to do everything in her power to ensure he had the very best chance at a full recovery, even if it meant shouldering an immense financial responsibility. But without help from others, she feared this goal may prove impossible to achieve.
Any support that could be provided - whether it be help with accommodation costs in California, food expenses, medical bills or travel funds - would mean the world to Delores and Daejhon during this difficult time. It would lift an enormous burden and allow Daejhon to concentrate solely on regaining his health without the added stress of finances.
Most importantly, it could save his life by making it possible for him to complete the full month of recovery care recommended by his doctors. Delores is asking from the bottom of her heart for any assistance that would make this vital next step in her son's medical journey attainable.
