Dad’s battle with Esophageal Cancer
To all our family and friends, it is with a heavy heart we must inform you that on September 23, 2021 my father in law Yong Kun Chou (people know him as 仇記 / 阿永)has passed away.
In May of 2020, he was diagnosed with stage 3 esophageal cancer. During the next few months he underwent chemotherapy and radiation in an attempt to destroy and stop the cancer cells from spreading.
After his treatment he had surgery to remove most of his esophagus. There were complications after the surgery which prevented him from breathing normally. His lungs started to fail and he eventually had to be put on ECMO.
His last trip back to the hospital was from a complication he had with breathing. Doctors found that he had pleural effusion and that the cancer had metastasized into his lungs. The doctors said there was no other treatment as he was far into the stages of this cancer and it had shown to be very aggressive.
He decided to come home under hospice care to spend his final days with those who were close and dearest to him. Most importantly, our goal was to keep him as comfortable as we can.
Yong Kun Chou, was a loving husband, a father of two beautiful daughters, and grandfather to 3 amazing grandchildren. All his life, he worked hard to make sure he was able to provide the best for his family.
You may have known him for many years as the friendly baker on Avenue U along with his signature pineapple bun (菠萝包)and miniature buns (迷你包). During his time as a business owner, he put in 7 days of work, 365 days a week without rest.
My father in law was a simple man, but he also had the biggest heart. One of the last things that he said were that he had no regrets and that he had fulfilled his life.
We would like to extend our invitation to all friends and family who knew him to pay your last respects and to give your prayers for his safe passage.
