Introducing Daddy Cool’s Chilli Sauce...

Daddy Cool’s Chilli Sauce is already a successful business. We have been supplying produce locally and nationally (e-commerce) and have both a vision and a hungry belly for the next chapter in the development of the business.

When I started in my family kitchen I had big dreams and over the years I’ve been working to make them a reality. However we’ve recently hit a hiccup which perhaps, in hindsight, I could have avoided had I had more knowledge of planning regulations.

I am situated on the edge of the Peak Park boundary in the Parish of Tintwistle, Glossop. It is a very beautiful part of The High Peak Park. I’m very lucky to own a nice sized plot overlooking a reservoir, from where I grow some of my produce and cook all of my sauces and chutneys.

As for many, 2020 was hard personally but thousands of small businesses who could carry on, including me, thrived with online sales… so much so that I was urgently in need of more space to store the pallets of empty bottles and jars required to meet demand. I spent a long time researching a secure and watertight way to store them and discovered a shipping container locally for sale. The penny dropped and just a few days later I had it delivered and in use.

The container had a makeover just after delivery whereby I increased the security of it and painted it green to blend in from all angles, apart from the road facing one which has my name and sauce image (like the one above). The artwork on the side has had an excellent effect in local marketing of passers by. However, following a complaint, it has been deemed unacceptable and has nearly cost me by business.

The problem began when a Peak Park representative visited my home to inform me someone had made an anonymous complaint to Peak Park (Local Authority) about my newly restored container that I had placed on my land to help with storage. They told me I could apply for planning permission for it retrospectively, whilst making it very clear at the same time that this would be refused.

After various attempts to #SaveTheContainer the council have made it very clear that it must go.

Solution...
After much correspondence with Peak Park, they have agreed a solution that allows me to continue my with my business and this is to build a purpose-built stand alone stone building befitting of the beautiful area of Peak Park.

The reason I need your support.
The unexpected financial impact and timescales have placed a profound amount of pressure on my business.

Whilst I am a profitable business, I am artisan, and turnover is not huge. Therefore, the finances required to build are more than I have, or can find from the profits of sales during these hard times we are all facing.

I have the determination to continue to succeed with my business but I do need help, which is where crowdfunding can hopefully help.

I have secured quotes from multiple local contractors and after going through everything and viewing other work they have done, the contractor I would like to use has quoted £12,000.

I have this year secured extra white label contracts and done every event possible to help increase profits, I’m currently at £4,000.

Any offer of reclaimed course stone or labour to help build the project is also gratefully appreciated, all we want to do is complete the build and get National Peak Park off our back so we may continue to focus on what we do best.

HOW IT ALL BEGAN

Hi Folks, I'm Steve, The owner, creator and producer of

DADDY COOL'S CHILLI SAUCE

It may be that some of you out there already know me either from the Makers Markets or other UK events which I regularly attend.

Let me tell you a story:-

I've always had a passion for spicy foods but I'm a Geordie and was always focused on Stotties and Pease Puddings in my earlier years.

When I met who was to become ‘Queen Annette from the Caribbean and Jamaica’ a passion of mine was soon to change from Stotties and Pease Pudding and become Spicy Caribbean foods!

After years of experimentation in my kitchen and having to find new and exciting ways to feed my 3 children it was soon apparent that my future was staring me in the face...Daddy Cool's Chilli Sauce!

Having won many awards (and I still am) we became really busy, then COVID struck. We continued throughout Covid but we required somewhere to store the bottles and jars, now being purchased by the pallet load. So we bought the container. We used it to store not only bottles and jars but also family items such as bicycles etc.

We then received a visit from Peak Park informing us that a complaint had been made against us and also that it would be necessary to apply for planning permission – which was likely to be refused.

In March 2020 I was diagnosed with Appendiceal Mucinous Neoplasm High Grade Cancer. I thought I was going to die and not be around to see my children grow into adults but, thanks to The Christie and the brilliance of the staff there, I'm still here. What a hell of an experience it was.

Peak Park showed little, if any compassion, carrying on with the onslaught of threats which could have meant the end of my business. Had I not had the determination to fight and find an alternative solution goodness knows what might have happened.

I am now in remission and hopefully will make a full recovery.

I am determined to work through this dilemma and find an acceptable solution that will avert the closure of my business. As mentioned, the solution is to build a more permanent building in the garden, but the cost is prohibitive.

I have approached Peak Park about this matter - they have shown some leniency and are allowing me to build the stand alone building.

So please I need support and help with the cost of building. I would be forever grateful to those who help by donating…no matter how small.

THANK YOU SO MUCH
