This is Corin. He is 6 years old and has type 1 diabetes. Corin endures 4-12 insulin injections each day to control his blood glucose (bg), and up to 18 finger pokes to read his bg levels. He has been such a trooper through this, and is fully involved in his diabetes management. As an only child his one wish is to have a dog who can help him manage his diabetes and be a constant companion to him so he can enjoy more freedom in life and feel sfer as he goes to sleep each night. Now and for the last year I (his mom) have been on night watch. Checking his bg and making corrections about every 2 hours through the night. I have had to put my career on hold indefinately to manage his diabetes well. With a diabetic alert dog we can cut Corin's night checks in half, which will allow him to get more restful sleep, myself more sleep in general and also feel more secure with this difficult and unpredictable disease day and night. This very special dog will be scent imprinted to alert me or Jon (daddy) when action is needed for lows or highs. It is a long and expensive process to get a service dog. We currently struggle to pay for an already expensive list of medical supplies (which are only partially subsidized) and can not currently afford a service dog by our own means. Since we are now a single income family with no benefits, we turn to you, Our friends whom we know and don't know. Our choice in care, we beleive, ensures that Corin will not suffer the complications of diabetes as we maintain tight control of his bg levels, but it takes a lot of work and financing. We are very hopeful for his future and that hope in part relies on the help of a canine family memeber. Our goal is to raise funds to cover the cost of the dog, his training, our travel to BC to meet the dog and the several week stay to integrate and train with him to pass public access tests, our travel to bring him home to Ontario with the trainer in tow for full intergration in our home. This dog will be a much loved part of the family, and allow us all to find a bit more peace within this awful disease.
Any amount is greatly apprieciated.
