Dad – in a nutshell:

Hahi (pron. Hah-hee) is a funny fella. Ask anyone. He’s never without a joke and if you’re quick enough you’ll catch on to his dry sense of humour, despite the serious look on his face. He taught us that laughter is contagious and gives energy to everyone around you.

Time Stands Still - Dad's diagnosis
In March 2018, following a routine check, dad’s GP saw concern with dads results so he sent him for further testing at the hospital. We met an Oncologist to hear the results.

‘Hahi has clusters of tumours in his liver. His condition is terminal. There is no cure. He will not beat this. He will need to begin chemotherapy immediately, but only to buy him more time.’

Dad was diagnosed with the most common liver cancer – ‘multifocal hepatocellular carcinoma’. He was given no hope for the future nor a treatment plan that would provide quality of life. I asked, ‘how much time do we have left with our dad?’.

“In my experience, unfortunately he only has 3 months.”

Time stood still. I left the room and broke down in the waiting area. I got myself together and returned to find dad in good spirits and super positive, even trying to make everyone laugh with inappropriate jokes about death. Classic dad.

Chemotherapy Treatment
Dad’s recovery from his first chemo session was long and painful, especially where the catheter entered his body. Everytime we asked how he was, he would say he was okay, but clearly he wasn’t.  This was just the beginning. He had a few more rounds of chemo ahead of him.

The second round took him a few weeks to recover and it was around this time that our local Pastor introduced mum and dad to Jill, a Naturopath, who attends his church.

Now, this is where Dad’s journey becomes VERY interesting.

A Safer Treatment
Jill starts dad on a treatment plan that would heal him with the right foods while removing the harmful foods from his diet. This would shift his acidic body to a safer alkaline level (as cancer thrives in acidic environments but cannot live in an alkaline.)

So, we changed dad’s diet and removed foods that fed cancer - sugar, carbs, red meats, acidic foods etc.

He started a juicing protocol consisting of carrot, celery, beetroot, ginger etc and a dietary protocol consisting of 80% fresh vegetables and fruit, Kangen water, Vitamin C Powder with bi-carb soda, crushed apricot kernels, turmeric, and SoPlus sachets rich in organic nutrients.

After a month, and without any harmful drugs or chemo, dad’s tumours stopped growing and his protein marker count had reduced dramatically. Dad began to exceed doctors expectations and had now lived past 3 months.

Dad withdrew from hospital care deciding that chemo and radiation does more harm than good. However, a final MRI scan revealed new tumours on his right 5th and 7th anterior ribs.

They discharged dad and sent him to the end of the line - Palliative care.

Constant Pain
The pain around dads ribs was around 6 out of 10.  Over the months it became worse.  By February 2019, dads pain is constantly at a 9/10. His mobility and physical appearance are beginning to deteriorate. We cannot get new scans as he’s rejected any further treatment so now we are fighting blind.

In March, we couldn't see past the next 3 months. A year is now approaching and we have celebrated his 70th birthday on the 9th of February.

Hope on the Horizon - A Cure for Dad
Jill spoke to Sam about a treatment available in Auckland, New Zealand that is not permitted here in Australia. The treatment, GCMAF, is an intravenous immunotherapy used to reactivate the immune system to fight back. Dr Ulrich Doering is one of only a couple of doctors who provide this treatment in New Zealand. GCMAF has successfully treated many patients.

So, with nothing to lose and a shot at a second chance in life, we have decided to send dad to Auckland for treatment.

The Financial Reality
SoPlus nutrients are an expense of $1,050 a fortnight. Mum and Dad are both pensioners so we (the team) have all been contributing each week to ensure dad doesn’t miss a day. We have all had our struggles finding the money over the last 7 months, which has meant compromising the quantities and cutting back to fit our budgets.

We are at a critical point as time waits for no one. We have a week to finalise mum and dads house so they can relocate to New Zealand. We don't know how long his treatment will be so we will end the lease on their house, sell their cars, sell their unwanted household goods and store the rest.

Money from the sale of their cars and household goods will be put into this GoFundMe campaign, along with your donations to help cover the costs of:

·      GCMAF treatment

·      Flights

·      Accommodation

·      Transport

·      ‘SoPlus’ nutrient packs

What this means for Dad is a second chance at life. For our family, it would mean the world.
