My dad is in the ICU without health insurance. We need help.

Hi, my name is Kamila Sihuay. My father lives in Peru and he suffers from moderate pulmonary fibrosis. Last week he had a pulmonary complication that made it harder for him to breathe.

My family took my father to a private clinic emergency in Peru and got treatment for his lungs. Although it didn't seem to be a complex health situation, he ended up receiving surgery and during his recovery, he faced a life-death situation. To save him, he was intubated and put on a mechanical ventilator. Although his critical state slightly improved initially, it got worse in the next few days and has remained stationary in the past few days. It's already been 10 nightmare days.

On top of this, he doesn't have private health insurance. He has social health insurance as a dependent of my mother, but his health has been too critical and risky to move him to a social health insurance hospital. Further, the health insurance system to verify his insurance status fell down on those days. In short, transferring him to the health insurance hospital was impossible in the first days.

In the next few days and throughout this week, trying to transfer our dad to a social insurance hospital isn't as smooth as we would like. First, our dad's critical state is at present too weak to be transferred (doctors say this varies day by day). We are hoping it improves soon. Second, due to his weak health status, he might not be considered a priority on the waiting list to be admitted into the social insurance's hospital ICU. Third, the transfer between hospitals may take some time. We were told it could take between a few days or weeks, depending on how fast we can externally push for him to have an admission at the social insurance hospital. In other words, without securing an "ICU bed" at the social insurance hospital nothing happens-- or doesn't happen quickly enough. Our hands seem to be tied, and empty.

Taking all of the above into consideration, we are now facing insurmountable health costs that rise each day by 9,000 soles (about 3,331 Canadian dollars). It's been 10 agonizing days of nightmares and doctors don't know how many more days it will take for our father to make a recovery or not. If miraculously he does recover, the health costs we will be facing will hit us back again, and again. So, we are now asking for your help, in any way possible to pay off the debt at the clinic.

Please consider giving us a hand to cope with these stressful times. Any financial contribution helps our family.

Thank you,
