On October 1, 2026, a father stopped by the Lowe's in Federal Way for materials for a plumbing project at his own home. He is a flooring contractor — a small business owner in South King County who has paid his taxes, employed local workers, and spent nearly eight years installing floors in hospitals, senior living centers, and private residences across our region. That afternoon, his errand ended with ICE agents questioning him about his name and his car, and taking him into custody.

He has no criminal record. He had no prior deportation proceedings. He was going to buy plumbing supplies.

He is now being held at the Northwest ICE Processing Center in Tacoma. Nine years ago, he, his wife, son, and two daughters had to flee Ecuador due to rising violence in search of a safe future and the opportunity to build a new life.

Now, his son is in his third year of an engineering program at the University of Washington, and his two younger daughters hope to follow the same path. They came to this country with one goal: to study, build a future, and give their children opportunities they never had.

He is a strong and hardworking father, working from 6 a.m. until 7 p.m. most days — or until the job is finished. Even now, his family holds onto the same hope and faith that brought them here. They are not giving up.

But right now, his wife and three children are home without their breadwinner, after a husband and father was taken into custody while simply running an errand. At a time when ICE activity is escalating around us, this family — our community — needs us.

That's why we are stepping up. We are parents at Garfield High School, and this family is connected to our community through Fundación Corazón, a mutual aid food pantry in Seattle's Central District founded by Garfield High School students and alumni — children of immigrants who built this effort to make sure Latino families in our area have food and essentials at a time of real fear. The foundation began serving Garfield families and has grown to support others across the region. This is one of those families.

We're raising $6,000 to hire an immigration attorney and file for his first bond hearing. Every dollar of this goal goes to legal fees. All funds are being sent to the son outside of GoFundMe.

Filing fast matters. It keeps his case in Washington, close to his wife and kids — and makes it far less likely ICE moves him to a detention center in another state.

If bond is granted, the family will need help paying it. If there are more legal steps after that, we'll raise the goal in an update when we know what's ahead.

We'll post updates as things happen, including how funds are used.
Every donation — $5, $50, $500 — is a step toward bringing him home. In times like these, showing up for each other is how our community stays whole.

With gratitude,
