My girlfriend Stephanie and I wanted a dog after we moved in together and so one Saturday we ended up at the Alameda Animal Shelter where we met a beautiful and loving bull terrier/pitbull mix that we named Olive.
Olive had been found as a stray on the streets of Oakland and had been in the shelter for six months prior to us meeting her. How she had been there so long remains a mystery, she had the biggest smile on her face when we met her and we were instantly in love with her.
After meeting her that Saturday we decided to think about it and returned the next day to adopt Olive and give her the life she deserved.
Olive had a limp and after we had her examined by the orthopedist it was determined she had a level 3 luxating patella on her left hind leg.
What this means is that the groove in her knee bone isn't deep enough and her knee often will dislocate causing inflammation and discomfort as well as the limp. This is something she was born with, but it is important she get the necessary surgery on it or it will worsen.
Her surgery will be done by an orthopedic specialist and the groove in her knee will be deepened so it won't dislocate in the future. This will reduce inflammation and any arthritic tendencies and after a couple months of recovery, Olive should be healthy and able to live pain free for the rest of her life with us.
Surgery will be done by the VCA Bay Area Veterinary Specialists in San Leandro. They have generously knocked the cost down of the surgery to $3,800 to help us afford it. However, that is still much more money then either of us have.
The Humane Society of Alameda has also generously pledged to cover half the costs of Olive's surgery. This still leaves us $1,900 short of being able to afford the surgery.
We are hoping you can help us cover the costs of this important surgery to help Olive live a healthy, pain-free life. This money will only be used to cover the cost of the surgery, in which it is guaranteed to work and improve her overall health and well being.
This means so much to us. Olive is a truly special dog and anyone who has met her can tell right away how loving and loyal she is. She had a hard start in her life, but we're glad she's a part of our family and want to help her live a more comfortable and pain-free life.
