I have known Tom for many years and have also known his love for German Shepherds first hand. Tom saw a need in his area for an efficient and well run rescue for German Shepherd dogs. He acted on that need and with the help of a friend created GERMAN SHEPHERD SAFE HAVEN in Orange County, California.
From his home, Tom started saving German Shepherds in all conditions; from starved, to injured, to ill, and sadly, some abused. He also rescued perfectly healthy dogs who were about to be euthanized for no other reason than they were out of time. Some days, Tom has driven hundreds of miles just to rescue a dog.
Unfortunately, as the economy lurched to a halt and has slouched along these past years, Tom became unemployed but did not abandon his mission. At great expense to himself, and his home, he continued his work undaunted by his ever increasing financial burdens. For Tom, the dogs come first.
I think Tom deserves our help and should be rewarded for his unmitigated devotion to his rescue and to those wonderful dogs who have graced our lives, become a part of our families and, in my case, a very special dog named Leo who brought joy to a broken heart.
I would compel each and every one of us to give Tom what we can. He has never abandoned his goal nor his commitment to the German Shepherds saved and the future German Shepherds who need our help. It takes courage to keep going forward when the weight of financial obligation is pulling you down. He is what Thomas Payne referred to as the “Winter Soldier”. By keeping Tom afloat, we keep alive faith in human compassion and the belief that one person can make a difference no matter how big or small.
