I am starting this campaign for my little brother Scott. He is my best friend and my heart breaks every minute of the day he is in the hospital. He is 26 years old, a hard worker, owns his own home, and loves playing with his beagle Stanley.
Scott started feeling ill this past Thanksgiving, 2016, with a slight stomach ache. He vomited the following day but then started feeling better over the weekend. On Sunday evening he vomited again and has been sick ever since. He went to the local ER Monday evening and was sent home with a diagnosis of gastroenteritis. Tuesday he started having blood in his stool with the pain in his stomach getting worse so he went back to the Hospital ER early Wednesday morning, 11/30/16. He was admitted that day and is still currently there.
Thus far, he has had multiple tests done. He has had colonoscopies that have found bleeding ulcers in his small intestines and colon, multiple CT scans, including contrast CT scans, multiple X-Rays, ultrasounds, the NG tube twice, and a PICC line (central venous catheter). He is also currently getting TPN for nutrition.
Scott has an amazing team of doctors surrounding him, but they have told us (his family) that they are baffled on a diagnosis because all the test have come back negative or normal, except one, Lupus anticoagulant. The doctors will recheck this diagnosis again in 12 weeks because even though he tested positive for it, the doctors aren’t seeing any symptoms relating to it. It is still unclear what is/was causing the ulcers. Doctors don’t believe it is Crohn’s disease even though that is what most of his symptoms are because they aren’t seeing something that they should (I personally don’t understand most of what they say). His current doctors are even talking to specialist down in Boston because Scott is such a unique case and they want to make sure they are doing all the tests that they can.
His stomach pain is almost gone, which we believe is due to the NG tube being in. They saw in one of the scans that by one of the bleeding ulcers, it is/was extremely inflamed causing a “blockage” of sorts and that lead to his stomach contents getting backed up which then caused gas to build up and cause the pain. I have never seen him in so much pain as the two days he had the NG tubes put in (12/2/16 was the first time and 12/8/16 was the second time).
Doctors have given him multiple antibiotics due to having an elevated white blood cell count. He had an adverse reaction to one of them, causing his joints to stiffen up and become painful.
Currently he is still on antibiotics, heparin, steroids, and TPN.
I am staring this campaign to hopefully help him financially. He is going on his third week out of work and we anticipate many more weeks out of work. He currently does not have any more vacation or sick time to use at work and he works for a small company so he does not qualify for FMLA. Even with medical insurance, we anticipate a significant medial bill. Plus all the follow up visits needed, potentially for the rest of his life.
I am begging anyone that is able to donate, to please do so. If we can help alleviate this one stress caused by his sickness it will be a huge help. Scott doesn't know I am setting this campaign up, but I want to do all that I can to help him.
Thank you,
