On July 4th,  Ben was in Ocean City enjoying the day with friends. When he went body surfing,  he dove into the water in front of the lifeguard stand. The lifeguard quickly realized that he did not get up.

The lifeguard rushed into the water to rescue him. They crossed his arms behind his head to brace his neck. Quickly many other lifeguards came into the water to assist and stabilize Ben's neck.  The lifeguards involved in the rescue were 21 years old. They made the family aware that Ben was a strong young man and a fighter and that Ben was able to keep it together the entire time.  Ben was able to talk and answer all questions.

At the hospital it was discovered that he broke his neck at C5 and suffered a spinal cord injury.  Once stabilized, he was then transported to Shock Trauma where he is undergoing testing and multiple surgeries.

He is surrounded by loving family and friends.  We are asking for your assistance to help the family with impending medical and unforeseen expenses for Ben's care.

7/23/19 Update from Mom

Good morning our #PRAYERSFORPAP warriors, family and friends. Today is day nineteen of our journey. As always I start with how Bens day started after my coffee and shower time. Yesterday at 5:00 am they started Benjamin on his first twenty four hour Trach collar trials, some small exercise movements with his extremities, to help keep him from getting to stiff. They bathed him and they wanted to keep his day calm to see how he responded to his treatments so we watched some Game of Thrones and talked about his recovery process. He had Chad, Kodie and Sarah visit this evening. The time spent together was short because we had our first visit from Craig Rehabilitation facility in Denver. It was a good hour and a half or more of so much information on what they can offer Benjamin on his road to recovery. Benjamin was alert, and nervous, but became calmer as the meeting continued. He started asking questions on his own about how this process would even start because he can’t move most of his body. She was very excited about his questions and participation in this process. She talked about how this was a program to prepare him for his life after his time at Craig. Went over outings and how to learn to adjust to the world outside of a hospitals and rehab. The meeting ended around 8:00 last night and Ben has another visitor who came to speak to him about his own life changing experiences of his same injury that took place July 3rd of 2018. This gentleman had the same C5 burst injury and walked into Bens room with no assistance to share his story. He was very positive and thorough with his phases of healing and recovery. He is a Forman of a company and lives his life thanking God for his gifts of a miracle. When he left and visiting hours were over, Benjamin said he inspired him with tears in his eyes. It’s so hard to sit and put into words what conversations I have with him. His thoughts, fears and faith. He tells his story the best. I am so blessed to share this very difficult journey with him. This journey is not just about Bens recovery, but about my recovery as well. I am learning so much and realizing how precious life is every single moment of each God given day. When we lost our Danny boy. All of our lives changed, but my changed differently. I’m a home mom and fight a lower back injury as well. Nothing can compare to Bens but I’ve lived with pain and limitations since 1997. Sometimes I didn’t have the motivation to do anything. Watching our Benjamin these 19 days has made me see life in a whole new spectrum of positivity, and possibilities. It’s made me realize just how much love, and support we have. Not just during the bad times, but if open to it all the time. Thank you God and Benjamin for helping me share in this recovery and healing. I guess I just never noticed how I was changing. My eyes are now opened and I am even stronger now to help carry Ben every day of my lifetime if need be to help Benjamin know life doesn’t end after tragedy. There is purpose for each of us and we all have a gift to share no matter how small. Through faith, anything is possible. It’s 7:39 am and Ben has now been breathing on his own for over 27 hours. A new day begins and we have another appointment this evening with Shepherd from Atlanta. God please give us guidance on making the decisions on this next phase to recovery for Ben. As always. God Bless everyone of our prayer warriors, family, friends and caregivers. God is good and our faith is strong. Here’s to the new day. #PRAYERSFORPAP, #BENSTRONG, #FAITH, #MIRACLES.

7/22/19. Update from Mom

Good morning our #PRAYERSFORPAP warriors... today is day eighteen of Our Benjamin’s journey. Yesterday was a bit of a roller coaster of emotions. There are so many questions Benj has and the realization of Benjamin’s time here at Shock Trauma is soon coming to an end. With this in mind. Benjamin is deep in his thoughts of his next journey to recovery. When he got here to the Trauma center he was scared, and confused. He was on so many medications he was scared and going through so much with hallucinations, fevers, pain etc. As week one came to a close and his body and mind were becoming more receptive to his treatments and care. His appreciation to his visits from his great group of friends, family and special visitors has touched him so deeply. He was learning a new (temporary) normal. During these days, up to now, he has formed great trust, feelings and love for his very special nurses and caregivers. Benj has been doing great with all of his treatments and therapy’s with some anxieties but is walked through these scary times with gentle care. Benj is realizing his time here is coming to an end and is going through the thoughts of starting over. He tears as we talk about him missing these very special caregivers whom he has gotten to trust and love. He FaceTimes the ones who are off and keeps the ones on duty smiling. His spirit is infectious. The other unknown is today we start the process of visits with the rehabilitation centers. Today is Craig in Denver, tomorrow is Sheppard in Atlanta and Wednesday is McGee in Philly. This is scary for not only Benj, but us as a family. As we are trying to choose the very best care facility and treatment for rehabilitation that gives Benjamin the best hope of recovery, we realize our emotions, and love are second to his needs. This is as I tell Benj the time for him to be selfish and focus on himself and his recovery. Time to put yourself first as he will need to have faith in this journey, strength and determination in mind and know Miracles happen everyday. Benjamin is now up to eighteen hours of free breathing on his Trach collar trials and today I believe they are just going to see how he does pushing for twenty four hours. This is the hospitals goals for Ben and Bens goal, because he really hates the respirator. He is still fighting some pneumonia and has bit of a UTI. He is on antibiotics to treat this. Last night before he was willing to turn in around 1:30 am. He was given his bath and a clean shave to make him fresh to start his new day. He FaceTimed Tiffany Coleman (one of his special nurse friends) until he finally was ready to sleep. His daily journal book we keep for him was past around the unit, for well wishes and phone number exchanges. He wants to Snapchat with them to share in his recovery and his new experiences. This is so awesome as a mom to see him feel this love and trust to want to carry on these very important relationships he has formed. Thank you to all of Bens friends on the fourth floor for your love. You are loved back and when our day comes, you will be missed. I feel like today my words are jumbled or maybe not even making any sense. Sometimes it’s just so hard to put into words of what is going on and our very crazy emotions that seem to switch on and off in seconds. Our day is about to begin and I’d like to thank everyone who continue to keep us in your prayers. Thank everyone who gives so freely and lovingly each day. Our family is blessed and grateful for each and every kind act. Many blessings and much love to all...

7/20/19 Update from Mom this morning:

Good morning our #PRAYERSFORPAP warriors. Day sixteen. It’s not a lot to share between yesterday afternoon and this morning yet. Yesterday Benjamin had his PT and was amazing with his determination and will. As I shared his picture yesterday of him lifting his right arm with his wrist cuff to suction his mouth. He made it through his two six hour Trach collar trials successfully as his second one ended at 10:00 pm. He had a few visitors today while he slept. Thank you Kevin Anthony Mueller, Rebecca Stecher, My Sister Peggy and his sister Sarah Gossman. Ben is still fighting infections and fevers (off and on) and they are partly the reason he rests so much. We didn’t go outside because of the extreme heat and his breathing treatments, but he did get into his wheelchair and also had his acupuncture treatment. He looks forward to that treatment. He was then put back into his bed, then given his afternoon bath and got some much needed rest at this time. Later in the night, our good friend Jennifer Vick and her son (Bens friend) Porter came to visit and brought Sarah and I dinner and new shirts she designed for a fundraiser for Ben. Thank you Brother John Kane for approving the CHC Cardinal on Jennifer’s design to help raise money at the Cardinals Alumni at the Ropewalk in Ocean City today. Prayers for good weather and I already know the turnout of Alumni will be huge. I’m so happy Benjamin is part of this brotherhood. Benj had his nighttime bath with music and was asleep once more. Bens mind is now wrapped around his thoughts of Rehabilitation now, and a lot is going on in his mind. It has caused some extra anxiety on his part. This is a lot for him to wrap his mind around as this decision is getting closer. Benj is sleeping now, waiting to start his morning. My prayers as always is for Gods mercy and Miracles for Benjamin and our family on this up and coming path forward to our new normal, at least at this time. God is all loving. God is good and God performs miracles everyday. I look forward to our mornings start and can’t wait for my husband Matt to get here today. Dad had to stay home yesterday to get some much needed things caught up on, including conversations with three top medical rehabilitation centers. This is overwhelming to say the least as we all are trying to do our parts in this process, even if one can’t be there for the day. Thank you Matt for taking care of these many responsibilities that are coming our way. We love you. Now to start our day with our big guy Benjamin (our hero). As always thank you everyone for your continuous prayers, love, encouraging words, meals, and donations. Our family has been blessed and most grateful. Have a blessed day.

7/19/18 Afternoon update from Mom

#PRAYERSFORPAP WARRIORS. I just had to share this awesome giant step for Benj in rehabs just now. He is wearing a wrist splint to help him hold his oral suction thing (not sure of medical terminology) To help him be independent at times to clear his mouth as needed. He is now discussing the Game of Thrones with his therapist! So happy to witness once again this amazing miracle of his progress. . #BENSTRONG
I forgot to mention he had his staples removed from his posterior surgery this morning, and now they are removing the stitch around his Trach collar. God is good...
