On July 4th,  Ben was in Ocean City enjoying the day with friends. When he went body surfing,  he dove into the water in front of the lifeguard stand. The lifeguard quickly realized that he did not get up.

The lifeguard rushed into the water to rescue him. They crossed his arms behind his head to brace his neck. Quickly many other lifeguards came into the water to assist and stabilize Ben's neck.  The lifeguards involved in the rescue were 21 years old. They made the family aware that Ben was a strong young man and a fighter and that Ben was able to keep it together the entire time.  Ben was able to talk and answer all questions.

At the hospital it was discovered that he broke his neck at C5 and suffered a spinal cord injury.  Once stabilized, he was then transported to Shock Trauma where he is undergoing testing and multiple surgeries.

He is surrounded by loving family and friends.  We are asking for your assistance to help the family with impending medical and unforeseen expenses for Ben's care.

7/16/19 Update from Mom

Good morning my prayer warriors. Day twelve. While each day changes. I feel I’m reporting the same things. So many emotions right now, so much fear and uncertainty for all of us, especially Benj. Each day we start early and as I watch the teams start each rooms evaluations . I take that time to myself to pray and reflect. We have a very long road ahead of us, but through faith and prayers, I know the Good Lord is already working on his plan for Benjamin and us. We are a strong family. We’ve been through a lot in two years. I want everyone to know, even though Benjamin is suffering from mid to high fevers, tiredness from his Trach trials (going for four hours today) and the small amount of therapy in his recliner wheelchair chair he is making small progress each day. I am focused on helping him to remember his faith and Gods miracles. He smiles a lot, even when he is feeling bad. We try to keep him uplifted and focused on his first goal and the next etc. now for some of his highlights. He has had an overwhelming amount of visitors who is happy to spend even a few minutes with him to tell him how much he is loved. He’s had his favorite Coach Pietramala visit twice with strong words of encouragement. A group of FOXTROT POLICE force visited yesterday to thank him for his support for the lives of police officers everywhere. They wished him well and we were able to get a picture of them. The police officer that was shot yesterday morning (I prayed for this) was placed in the room beside him in R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma. My heart hurts for his wife as I watch her strength watching over her husband. Benjamin prayed for him last night. Happy note is we are reading The Great Gatsby and he is insisting on me watching Game of Thrones with him. I am a Hallmark girl. I’ll let you know how that goes. We listen to his favorite country music during his baths and therapy. He loves his acupuncture trials and his wonderful nurses here in his trauma unit. He looks forward to shift changes to see who he has for the night shift. Night shift is more fun he says. Well my coffee is empty and it’s time to shower and start my day with Benj. Please continue to keep our Benjamin in your prayers. He needs them so much. We feel the tremendous outpouring of prayers and love and I want to thank you all. I’m praying for less fevers and more progress and smiles. He will be starting four hour Trach collar trials today. Wish him luck on continuing to build the strength in his breathing and lungs. God Bless you all for all the prayers, love support, meals and special gifts you bring to our family. We love you all. #PRAYERSFORPAP, #PAPSTRONGAGAIN

7/15/19 Today’s updates from Mom

Late update... Day eleven. Yesterday Ben continued with fevers and hasn’t been taking visitors. We bathed him with ice last night while listening to a special playlist one of his nurses made for him. He had a few nurses helping and one doing respiratory treatment. Then they shaved him nice and smooth. He asked me to read to him and chose the “Great Gatsby”. He fell asleep not far into our reading. He has been tired from fevers and his Trach Collar trial therapy. He did three one hour treatments yesterday. Today he has low grade fever and successfully completed his first two hour treatment. He had a special group of visitors today who came to visit because they noticed Bens flag supporting Police Lives Matter. I was humbled and proud of this special visit just wanting to wish our Benjamin well and thank him. He is sleeping now but I wanted to share a picture in the waiting room. The nurses run a tight ship on two visitors at a time. I’m one proud momma! #PRAYERSFORPAP

Continued.......

Another update to the first one. Coach Pietramala made it over to visit Benjamin and give him an awesome pep talk and a great boost of morale! He is now starting his second two hour breathing treatment! Happy day for all. Ben is still tired though.

7/14/19 Evening Update

I first want to take a minute on behalf of the Paepcke family to thank each and every one of you for your support. Please know that we are seeing and reading all of the touching comments and prayers that you are sending to Ben and his family. To those of you that have suffered similar injuries and are offering your support to Ben, we are extremely grateful. As you are all aware from the updates that are shared, things are changing rapidly and Matt, Lil and Sarah have all of their focus on Ben’s recovery. Once things settled down they do intend on reaching out to those of you that have offered to talk with Ben. We can not thank you all enough for the continued prayers and support for the Paepcke family. Keep the prayers coming.
Below is an update from Sarah, Ben’s amazing sister:

UPDATE: We have had an emotional couple of days. Ben has a new goal to work for! He is on trach trials where he is taken off the ventilator for periods of time. Today he did an hour at a time three times with success. His goal is to be taken off of the ventilator and breathe on his own for one week. He will then be moved to another wing of shock trauma for our next goal! He also was able to mouth words to me because I arrived so late (I spent some much needed quality time with the boys). “I MISSED YOU!”, “WHERE WERE YOU”, “I WAITED ALL DAY FOR YOU”. Good news is.. he realized I hadn’t come yet and he was understanding once I told him I took the little guys to swim. He is not so pleased about having pictures taken right now but he did allow us to take one for Stephen... he called while I was there and asked his uncle to please please just send one thank you again for all of the support, love, and prayers! We are getting Benj strong together! #PRAYERSFORPAP

Update from Mom

Day ten. My two favorite things is The miracles of Christmas and faith. A bit of an emotional day yesterday for Ben, Matt and myself as Benjamin is fully alert and aware of his possible future. Lots of very hard questions yesterday from Benjamin, who only expected the truth in return. As we taught him, you are only as good as your word. As I am having my coffee and going over how scared I was to see fear in his eyes. I knew in my heart I could help explain things gently and assure him you don’t start a lacrosse game thinking of the last two minutes of the game. You think about getting the ball and going for your first goal. Each day something positive is happening for him. It’s hard explaining that to a once heathy normal strong young man, especially your son. I will continue to pray for strength and guidance to help carry my son, our Benjamin through this journey. Thank you all for your continuous prayers and love. God Bless you all. I believe in miracles. God listens. #PRAYERSFORPAP, #BELIEVE
