This is dori. She is a 30+ year old pony mare we rescued last week for $5 when no one wanted her. She was covered in burrs and caked on mud. We brought her home and she walked off the trailer like she owned the place. She was covered in flith and stood absolutely perfect for her head to toe bath. She also stood perfect for farrier.
Saturday morning she took a turn downhill.
She has missing teeth and she has a bad choke that had likely been building up before we got her. We had to get emergency vet out who worked tirelessly to tube her and to try to break up the obstruction. Worse choke my vet has seen. We couldn't break it up Saturday so we had to let her rest after she got a nose bleed. She still was in good spirits and we took her for a walk where she wanted to meet everyone she could see! Even though the prognosis was bleak if we couldn't resolve the choke, dori made it clear she wanted to live.
We massaged her throat for ages Saturday night and by Sunday morning with only a bit of effort, the vet was able to pass the tube to her stomach!!
She aprirated some water during this and likely some food so she is on antibiotics to make sure she doesn't get phemonia. She also got iv fluids Sunday and today.
She is in bad condition but has the best spirit. She is a fighter. She's had her teeth done and is now on meds and fluids to get her strength back up before starting small mashes.
She loves apple juice and nickers every time she sees us. She gets her big stall with her heat lamp to keep her warm until she gets back up to weight.
Dori only cost $5 but her vet bills are climbing . We have created this by request for people who wish to help her on her journey. We thank each and everyone who decides to help is help dori.
Everyone needs to learn a lesson from dori, when life gets hard, just keep swimming!
