If you've every taken the MBTA Redline at Porter Square during the morning rush hour, you are sure to know Al, aka "the Mayor of Porter Square". One of the kindest, sweetest, most giving people you will ever meet. He always has a smile for anyone passing thru, he gives out treats to our kids & buys them presents, and he helps T riders when no MBTA employee is available. He brightens our mornings by decorating his newspaper stand for every holiday imaginable.
Al needs our help.
His lovely wife Eileen has to have a transplant. They are terrified about the bills to come, having been told that between the surgery and the post-surgery medication, (despite having some insurance) they will need between $80,000-$100,000 for out of pocket expenses.
Anyone that knows Al or Eileen knows they would give the shirts of their back for anyone in need. It's our chance to now help these amazing, beautiful people.
Every little bit helps, and I mean EVERY bit helps. Please consider a donation of $5, $25, $50, $500... whatever it may be that you can afford.
They are long time residents of Somerville and Al was working his newspaper stand long before I met him over 13 years ago.
Please also share this link with anyone you know in Somerville, anyone in the Porter Sq area in Cambridge or anyone who takes the commuter rail to Porter and hops on the Redline. You never know who may know Al & Eileen and have a few extra dollars to help.
He is too proud to ask for help himself. So, here I am, asking for him.
