Hello friends and family,
As most of you know Amanda's sister, Candice has battled cancer for the past 6+ years. What started as breast cancer when Candice was only 31, resulted in chemotherapy, radioation treatments, and eventually double mastectomy. But after a long battle, Candice seemed to have won the war on cancer. She progressed so well that in December of 2014 she gave birth to a precious little girl named Exie.
Unfortunately while Candice was pregnant with Exie, her cancer returned. Shortly after Exie was born, Candy went back to Vanderbilt Medical Center for new rounds of radiation and chemo treatments. Earlier this year, Candice learned the treatments were not having the success that we had hoped and the cancer was spreading throughout her body. She began even more radiation and chemo treatments. Unfortunately, these treatments have not slowed the cancer.
Over the past few weeks, Candy has suffered from intense headaches that culminated with a seizure late Friday night, Candy was admitted to Vanderbilt hospital where she had another seizure. Candice became unresponsive and we all feared the worst. Upon hearing of Candy's hospitalization, Amanda and I made arrangements for Amanda to travel to Nashville to be with Candy and her family.
After 2 days in the ICU, Candy began to respond and even requested orange sherbert ice cream. But the Dr's were still trying to diagnose the cause of the headaches and seizures that put Candy in the ICU.
On Sunday they performed a spinal tap. The initial results of the spinal tap indicated that Candy was suffering from meningitis. Ironically, this was good news. Meningitis, while life threatening, is treatable with antibiotics. Amanda and I can attest to that from our experience with Alex and his bout with meningitis as a baby.
However, we learned today that after further testing of the spinal fluid, not only was the meningitis bacteria present but so too were cancerous cells. The cancer has spread to Candice's spinal column. The doctors at Vanderbilt sent Candy home this morning with hospice and the prognosis that she has only weeks maybe a month to live.
I have set this GoFundMe page up in order to help send Amanda home on the weekends to spend time with her sister, brother, and parents as they endure this devastating ordeal. Money raised from this page will help with Amanda's travel cost back and forth from Dallas to Nashville. Any additional money raised will go to start a college fund for little Exie.
Amanda will begin flying back to Nashville on Friday. We hope that she has to make this trip many times. Thank you for your support.
Will
