D19 Mutual Aid is a group of neighbors dedicated to supporting new arrivals to Chicago. Our group began when migrants were first transported to the city and were housed at the police station in Lakeview. Members of the community saw families, including children, struggling to meet their most basic needs. In response, people organized to form a mutual aid group, working to help individuals and families feel welcome and cared for. People are no longer housed at our local police station, but the needs have remained great as they have moved on to shelters and homes. We are committed to continue helping people as long as there are people in need!

In an average week, we receive over 40 requests, representing about 120 people—including lots of kids and babies. Each person receives a basic "welcome kit" of clothing & toiletries, and they have the opportunity to ask for whatever they need. The most common requests are clothing, winter gear, bedding, shoes, over-the-counter medications, diapers/wipes/formula, and other baby gear. Our philosophy is to not police needs, but to dignify requests within our capacity.

We collect gently used clothing, outerwear, shoes, bedding, towels, baby gear, and other essential items from generous donors (message us if you can donate -- [email redacted]. We also need lots of supplies that must be purchased new: underwear, socks, toiletries, diapers, and other necessities.

The money we raise here will be used to buy these must-be-new items in bulk. Every item we purchase goes directly into the hands of a person in need.

Our organization is neighbors helping neighbors. We have no overhead or operating costs—just a lot of heart, a lot of volunteers, and a lot of care. Your contribution will help us continue making a difference in the lives of our new neighbors. Thank you for supporting us.
