Help a stranger

I have no idea how this will go over, but humor me: I was sworn in as a juror on case that goes to trial tomorrow and due to the nature of it, this could go on for a little bit of time. As my fellow jurors and I left the courtroom yesterday, one of us, a young, single mother of two (I believe she said she was a nurse or in nursing school) started crying silently in the elevator. When someone asked her if she was ok, she explained that she had no idea how she was going to make ends meet this month. Her job would not compensate her for her lost time on jury duty; she didn’t know how she was going to pay her rent, buy food or take care of her kids. As annoyed as I was about the prospect of being away from work and my routine for the unforeseeable future, I couldn’t begin to process what it would be like to be in this woman’s situation. Without knowing her at all, I wished I could help her. So I don’t know - if I pass a virtual hat around my Facebook friends, does anyone want to throw in $10? I’ll give her a check and anyone who wants to contribute let me know? Is this crazy? Is this legal? Meanwhile Patty Hewes is nowhere to be seen in this courtroom and that is a major let down...
