Stem Cell Treatment for Moms Multiple Sclerosis

Donation protected
My Mother, Christa Mitchell, has fought Multiple Sclerosis for 17 years. In that time she has tried many different treatments to ease her pain and reduce her symptoms but they all have proved to be unsuccessful, commonly leaving her in a worse condition than she was prior to the treatments. Recently she received news from her doctor of a Stem Cell treatment that could work wonders for her! The only barrier in her way to the path of a possible recovery is a lack of funds to pay for the treatment. To partake in this procedure, my mom would have to travel to another country and receive treatment from the skilled doctors there. The $75,000 goal is set to include costs of the HCST treatment along with travel expenses for my mother and stepfather (who will be her caregiver for the 28 day treatment period). This would be much a blessing to my family and I know this is a lot of money but this is the miracle my mom has been waiting for! Please no matter how much you can donate we appreciate anything whether it be monetary or in the form of prayers. Thank you for anything you can provide.

More information about the HCST (hematopoietic stem cell transplant) treatment:
HSCT attempts to “reboot” the immune system, which is responsible for damaging the brain and spinal cord in MS patients. In HSCT for MS, the blood cell-producing stem cells, derived from a person’s own bone marrow or blood, are collected
and stored, and the rest of the individual’s immune cells are depleted by
chemotherapy. Then the stored hematopoietic stem cells are reintroduced to the
body. The new stem cells migrate to the bone marrow and over time produce
new white blood cells. Eventually they repopulate the body with immune cells, with the goal of HCST being to remove all cells that cause damage to the brain and spinal cord.
What is involved in the HSCT procedure?
A. While the general approach is the same, there are different treatment
protocols that vary depending on the medical center and doctors performing the
procedure. In general, these are some of the steps involved:
1. A person undergoing HSCT to treat MS is given some form of chemotherapy,
usually by infusion in the vein, for up to 10 days (usually as an outpatient) to
stimulate the production of bone marrow stem cells and promote their release
into the blood. Then some blood is drawn from a vein and the stem cells in the
blood are stored for later use.
2. Then the individual is usually hospitalized, and given a powerful mix of
chemotherapies for up to 11 days to kill or suppress immune cells throughout
the body.
3. The stored stem cells are then infused into the bloodstream through a vein.
4. The individual is usually given medicines such as antibiotics to help combat
infection.
5. The person remains in the hospital for an additional period of time while the
immune system begins to rebuild itself. Sometimes individuals are discharged
from the hospital in two to four weeks, but this can be longer. In a recently
published Canadian study, the hospital stay after transplantation lasted 10 to
160 days, depending on any side effects experienced.
6. The immune system gradually rebuilds itself within 3 to 6 months.
