Cynthia Woodson's Memorial

2.2 Million African Americans struggle with substance abuse in America. Substances includes alcohol, marijuana, cocaine, opioids, and other illicit drugs. Cynthia, like many others, struggled with substance use and all the stigma associated with it her entire life. In addition, mental health issues often occur simultaneously with substance abuse. Cynthia Woodson was a survivor because despite many failed sobriety attempts and rehab programs, she continued to try time after time to fight her addiction. Addiction is a disease. Addiction claimed Cynthia Woodson’s life.

Cynthia Woodson of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, beloved mother, sister, grandmother, relative and friend passed away Monday, May 25th.  She leaves behind 6 beautiful, intelligent children, Tiffany, Timothy, Christina, Stephanie, Uniqua, and Jordan. Despite their disadvantaged circumstances, 4 of the 6 children are currently low-income 1st generation college students, who were fortunately able to attend college through scholarships and financial aid. These children devote their lives to studying racial health disparities, mental health and other humanities, fighting to make a difference in their underrepresented communities and others like it.  All the children have been through the foster system, in multiple homes throughout their lives. Jordan Woodson is only 14 years old, with very little left behind including hope. Given the suddenness of this occurrence, her children were unprepared for her homegoing. No one can possibly explain the pain associated with this loss. Cynthia does not have life insurance and her children, financially depend solely on funds related to school.

As her friends and family, we humbly ask you to provide financial support for the family to assist with funeral costs and expenses. Please contribute whatever you can to help support her children in their time of need. The importance of mental health is often minimized, especially in black communities. Even if you don't struggle with a substance use disorder or mental health illness, you have the opportunity to inspire others and raise awareness! BreakTheStigma!
