A friend urgently needs our help and we hope you can be part of it. Cynthia Johnson is seeking to stabilize her housing for the coming year during a critical time for her health.
Three years ago, Cynthia nearly lost her life fighting a chronic disease that the medical community is only gradually starting to understand. During that dark time, she lost her home, lived in a motel for a year and a half, and, shockingly, dropped weight to only 84 pounds.
Thanks to the help of dear friends and someone who helped her find an apartment, she has regained some physical stability and her spirit is strong.
Cynthia's bright smile today belies the battles she has fought. After surviving a life-altering bout with breast cancer about 15 years ago, she regained much of her productivity, but then was stopped in her tracks by what she learned was ME/CFS (myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome).
ME/CFS is a serious multi-system disease that causes dysfunction of the neurological, immune, endocrine, and energy metabolism systems. It is extremely painful and unpredictable and has debilitated Cynthia for the past 10 years. After a career supporting many worthwhile non-profits and causes, and raising a young son as a single mother, it now leaves her unable to work.
Currently, Cynthia is able to access food stamps and food pantries, Medicare, and social security disability insurance, but these benefits are not enough to live on and are often unreliable. Unexpected expenses, especially with healthcare, are common.
All who know Cynthia know how much she has fought for causes helping others. If her housing could be covered for the next 12 months, Cynthia would experience an enormous weight off her shoulders and more room to heal and the ability to cover her other basic living expenses. The peace of mind that can come with knowing she will not be homeless in the coming year would be a true godsend.
