More information about The National Autistic Society: Founded in 1962, we are the UK's leading charity for autistic people and their families. Our goal is to help transform the lives, change attitudes and create a society that works for autistic people.
Our son Sasha was born in Norwich but we moved to Oban when he was five. Sasha died by suicide in Oban two weeks before his 20th birthday. He was exceptionally clever and exceptionally kind and was loved by those many whose lives he had touched. He loved diving you can see him ready for a dive here and he found the peace that he couldn’t find in life in the silence and beauty of Scottish lochs .
He had masked his autism since he was seven. We miss him so very much of every minute of every day . He died as a result of undiagnosed autism and the absence of support that diagnosis may have given him to find a way through the mental health issues that were the result of his autism and that made him so very vulnerable . Many people don’t realise that autism can be lethal and that the main cause of death for people with autism and no intellectual disabilities is suicide.
This ride is in honour of Sasha and to raise awareness of the tragedies that undiagnosed autism can cause .
