About Us

We are first-generation Latina twin sisters born and raised in East Los Angeles. We started our education at Murchison Elementary School in the Ramona Garden Projects, a public housing project in Boyle Heights . We continued our education through the LAUSD system and now currently attending college at separate institutions. One attending Cal State LA and the other attending Los Angeles City College.

We have received various awards in tech competitions and hackathons such as the NASA International SpaceApps Challenge, AT&T Developer Summit, HackForLA, and many more. We both love to go out on the weekends to code at different hackathons and it was funny when our parents thought we were out clubbing.

Due to the continuing support of our family, friends and communities , my twin and I have been able to inspire more diveristy in tech as The CyberCode Twins . We have been featured in:

Wow!!!! Who talked at TEDxLAPL???

Yes, my twin and I gave a TEDx Talk "The Hackathon Effect" at the downtown Los Angeles Public Library. The video won't be uploaded until the middle of Fall. As it was a student-organized TEDxLAPL  event, the film students at LACC who be editing the high-quality video are currently out until college is back in regular session.

What is a hackathon?

Hackathons are events in which students, programmers and designers collaborate on software projects for 24-36 hours. That means hardly any sleep, lots of experts to learn from, and working on the latest technology.

What have you done for the communites?

We are part of Lincoln Heights Neighborhood Council where we solve community issues. We are involved with DIY Girls , Los Angeles Mobile Developer Group , LOFT , and take time to help Girls Who Code  and TXT . We volunteer as developers to help kids gain an interest in tech and present solutions of community issues to many officals.

Recognition for being great role models for the City of Cudahay

Presenting an anti-bullying app, EXBully to the Mayor of Los Angeles and taking part of HACK4LA  hackathons such as ImmigrationHack, Civic HackDay and more.

How did you hear about Galvanize?

My name is America Lopez and I am the older twin by five minutes. I applied to the program because I saw Glassbreakers are offering scholarships w/ living stipend for women in tech applying to Galvanize , which is a six-month developer program based in San Francisco. This was shared often on Facebook especially on the Latinas Think Big Facebook group

Why did you apply to Galvanize?

Hackathons have made a great impact in my life because having access to latest types of technology and wonderful mentors helped build my confidence and interest in software. But to imagine myself in a developer program that has formal training, great industry practice, and wonderful mentors that is not for 24 hours but for 6 months is an opportunity I cannot pass up.

The big question nowadays is why isn’t there a lot of women in tech?

The answer to that is because not enough women are being prepared enough for these tech jobs. That’s why I think it is so important for me to apply for the Galvanize program so I learn the latest skills and best industry practices.

Did you get accepted?
YES!!!!!!!

What did Galvanize offer you?

They gave me a call when I was at the Lincoln Heights Farmer's Market and told me that they awarded the Glassbreakers scholarship  to me.  I was so estatic that I couldn't hold my joy in and turned a lot of heads around wondering why I am so happy!!!

What are the Glassbreakers?

Glassbreakers is doing amazing work to support women. They offer scholarships for women who want to learn to code as part of this Galvanize Full Stack cohort. Up to four students will have between 25 and 50 percent of their tuition covered and will receive a stipend from Glassbreakers to help cover their cost of living.

Wait...another scholarship?

The admission staff was impressed with the work I have done for my community, the continuing efforts I have done to teach myself to code and how I done in their application process including their technical interviews and pre-challenges. Not only did they offered the Glassbreaker scholarship that will cover 50% of tuition, they offered another scholarship that brings the total to 75 % of the tuition covered.

Are you going to continue your education in college?

Yes I fully intend to be back in college when I am done with the six-month program. I owe it to myself, my family and especially to the community of Hispanicize , Latinas Think Big  and LATISM  (Latinos in Tech and Social Media) to continue my degree in Computer Science.

What happens after you join the class?

I will posting weekly updates to the @cybercodetwins Facebook , Instagram  and Twitter  and GoFundMe page and continue to keep in touch with my twin sister, Penelope Lopez.  We can finally be at two places at once. One continuing to code in Cal State LA and different hackathons in Los Angeles and I will be tackling code in San Francisco to show that diversity in tech matters and that it makes a huge impact for communities anywhere.
