Communities with lower socioeconomic status are disproportionally targeted by cyber attacks— operations conducted by hackers that seek to target digital systems. This is attributed to a scarcity of resources regarding cybersecurity within underserved areas, and a lack of awareness about the importance of securing online systems. These same factors also cause minorities to be severely underrepresented in cybersecurity careers, only being represented in a minuscule fraction of the industry’s positions. As the digital world gradually becomes more interwoven with reality, it is paramount that underrepresented groups have the tools they need to uplift themselves into promising careers in cybersecurity, with the ultimate goal of mitigating the harmful effects of cyber attacks, especially those caused by the disproportionate targeting of under-resourced groups.
Seeing these issues, we knew we had to take action. Our initiative, CyberBranch, aims to bridge the gap between socioeconomic status and access to careers in cybersecurity. With your support, we can help acquire the resources to expand awareness about cybersecurity and its career paths.
