To his family, friends and fellow firefighers, he's known as "Flippy". In the fire world, it's tradition to give each other nicknames. Dan" Flippy" O'Connell's nickname describes him in so many ways it would be almost impossible to name them all. Dan lives on Cape Cod. He is a firefighter and a former U.S. Marine. As a testament to his career, he is used to helping other people.
In early 2010, Dan was diagnosed with Adenoid Cystic Carcinoma. He found the help he needed at the Francis H. Burr Proton Therapy Center at Massachusetts General Hospital, one of the only hospitals in New England to offer such treatment — which targets the site of a tumor without damaging surrounding tissues.
It was a long hard fought battle for Dan. Through the never ending love and support of his family and friends, Dan perservered. Though his treatment had concluded, he continued to make regular visits to Mass General Hospital for check-ups.
This past August, during a check up at MGH, his onocologist delievered the news Dan always dreaded hearing again. There's "something suspicious in your nasal cavity, and I don't know what it is". Just like that things went from calm and peaceful, to fast and serious. He found himself in with another doctor, who confirmed that there was in fact a "mass" that would need to be removed. In early September, Dan underwent surgery at Mass Eye & Ear, and two weeks later, the results confirmed that his cancer had returned.
In just a few short weeks, he will begin his second round of proton therapy at the exact place it all began for him "just" 5 years ago. Which leads us to this the reason for this "gofundme" page. As we all know, cancer treatments are extremely expensive. Many families endure out of pocket expenses that can be astronomical.
In his first round, Dan spent $80,000 out of his own pocket for his co-payments and medical bills, which is the reason for the high goal that has been set. The money that we HOPE to raise will 100% go to Dan. The bills have already begun to come in, so the sooner the money can be raised to help, the better. There are no words that could possibly describe how much this will mean to Dan. He's the last person that enjoys asking for help of any kind. This time around, he knows that it will be necessary in order to stay "afloat".
Dan and I will be thankful beyond belief for your generosity, love, and support in helping him get through this second round of treatment. He's a fighter to the core, and will perserver every single step of the way.
Sincerely,
Rebecca and Dan
