Arion Tavakoli 'Dash' Award

Donation protected
I read of a man who stood to speak at the funeral of a friend. He referred to the dates on the tombstone from the beginning…to the end.

He noted that first came the date of birth and spoke the following date with tears, but he said what mattered most of all was the dash between those years.

For that dash represents all the time that they spent alive on earth. And now only those who loved them know what that little line is worth.

For it matters not, how much we own, the cars…the house…the cash. What matters is how we live and love and how we spend our dash.
~Lind Ellis

The Arion Tavakoli “Dash” Award is in remembrance of my best friend who passed away suddenly on May 30, 2014. The “Dash” Award honors a senior standing student at our high school alma mater, La Salle High School in Pasadena, Ca.  The Award is named after the poem “The Dash” by Lind Ellis, which was read at Arion’s funeral. “The Dash” is a poem about the importance of how each of us spends our existence; the impact of our presence in the lives of others.  The reasoning behind this award is to honor a student who lives each day with passion to make a difference and has a love and appreciation of life.
While Arion walked the hallways at La Salle he always made it a point to say hello or ask how someone was doing; whether it be a member of the faculty, upperclassmen while we were freshman or even the lowerclassmen when we were seniors. If you were friends with him he made it known to everyone around how much he loved and cared about you. Arion’s charisma, sense of ambition and generous nature is what made me love him so much.  His passion and optimistic spirit were contagious, even when times were tough and all the odds were against him.  Arion was tenacious and persistent.  He would never give up, it was not in his nature.  The student who receives the “Dash” award emulates the good-hearted nature that was so much a part of the spirit of Arion Tavakoli.

Let's give back to the community and keep Arion's memory alive!
