Greetings!
Deaf America Project is a photo documentary concentrated on the diverse and vibrant Deaf communities in America. We are showcasing the capabilities of Deaf individuals working together and achieving numerous goals that were once thought of by hearing counterparts to be impossible for a deaf individual to do—exposing the skills and talents of a Deaf community on every level.
Each deaf individual is unique, but there is one thing we all have in common: we all want respect. True, we are different, but we are not sub-human because we can not hear. It is who we are, and everyone faces challenges, and stereotypes raise false expectations that everyone with a disability shouldn't be doing the many things people without disabilities do. Everyone faces all kinds of difficulties in life.
The Deaf America Project's mission is to exhibit select innovative deaf individuals of various ages across the country to interrupt
the stigma behind the word "Deaf" and empower other deaf individuals to follow their passions.
I am David Yerby. I was born profoundly deaf and grew up in a hearing environment, using ASL, and through many years of speech therapy, I can lipread and speak. I have fought and successfully won many obstacles as a deaf photographer competing in a hearing world with publications in The Grammys, Sports Illustrated, ESPN, New York Times, and many more.
OUR WORLD MAY BE SILENT BUT IT DOES NOT HAVE TO BE INVISIBLE.
