Help us to raise funds for L.Z., who has been fighting for custody of her daughter since fleeing with her as a 5-week-old infant over 15 years ago. Since then, her ex-husband waged an unrelenting siege on her in and out of Court, even as she was still bleeding from childbirth.

L.Z. (whose full name is undisclosed to protect her) is now financially depleted. Her ex-husband is a wealthy attorney who, with his team of lawyers, has successfully manipulated the courts into awarding him the majority time with their child. This, despite the forensic custody evaluation, provided the Court with the recommendation for L.Z. as sole custodial parent.

L.Z. has not prevailed in Court due to lack of money, therefore, lack of adequate counsel. To say that the playing field is uneven is an outrageous understatement. Her ex is a wealthy and connected attorney from a political family. He is unrelenting in his pursuit of making L.Z. suffer in every way possible, including using their child as a weapon, as he knows this will hurt her the most. He has now maneuvered the system to have a large portion of L.Z. modest salary garnished and given to him, a cruel act done without due process.

Currently, not only has she been unable to see her child regularly for any meaningful amount of time, but this garnishment has left her unable to afford basic necessities despite being employed full-time. Nor can she afford an attorney to appeal this untenable situation. (Meanwhile, the entitled ex lives a life of excess, enjoying the fruits of her labor in every imaginable way, just as he had promised).

It is difficult to comprehend that family court can be this unjust, but sadly, it is not uncommon when abusers have money. Much work needs to be done to remedy such atrocities, which seem to protect the rights of the abuser, not the child or the normal, loving parent.

It is hard to convey the rippling effects of this judicial terror. It has derailed L.Z.’s entire life, which she has diligently tried to put back together for years. Over 15 years later, L.Z. is still being buried with legal papers, bills, and petitions, which require her money, time and energy while working full time and taking home, not even enough money to live on.
