Hi, I’m Jimmy. In July of 2024, I was diagnosed with stage 3 lung cancer. I started chemo treatments, and they lasted until November 2024. In December, the doctors removed half of my left lung. Then, in January 2025, I started 30 radiation treatments, one every weekday, and 6 chemo treatments once a week.
My employer was paying me to work from home, and when I told them I needed these additional treatments after surgery, I was let go two weeks later, which put a stop to my paydays and my health insurance. I worked for them for 3 1/2 years. I still wish them well and hope they prosper the best they can!
In the meantime, I can’t pay rent, insurance, electric, or food. I applied for unemployment and was denied because I cannot work a 40-hour work week. I also applied for SNAP (food stamps) and was denied as well. I just don’t get it; an illegal immigrant can come here and get $3k, a cell phone, and an apartment. I’ve worked my entire life and been forced to pay taxes. Now that I need just a little assistance, I get turned down. I’ve also applied for SSI benefits, but it takes up to a year to get your results.
