If you know Curtis Holmes, you know he has had his own landscaping business since graduating from Kennett High School in 1978. Curtis ran the bobcat, backhoe and truck plow while he and his workmen did the groundwork. Like his father, Hot Rod, Curtis was and still is a positive and giving person. Work was fairly plentiful for all those years with year-round jobs as big as Village of Kearsarge and Dana Place. A lot of locals also used Curtis for their yards and driveways.

But in the early morning of July 14, 2016 Cindy went upstairs to wake Curtis for work, where she found him unresponsive. Cindy called 911 and Curtis’s long saga began. With tremendous effort by North Conway fire rescue, Curtis was carried downstairs and to Memorial Hospital. Soon after he was rushed to Maine Medical where Cindy learned that diabetes had claimed Curtis’ right foot. It was amputated about a foot below the knee.

That July morning changed everything. Curtis and Cindy soon learned that the Medicaid system is difficult to navigate and as a result, Curtis still does not have a prosthesis. The Social Security disability system is even more complex and sometimes unfair and arbitrary in its decisions. In the meantime, Curtis has also developed “drop foot” in his right foot and must wear a brace for the rest of his life.

Without Curtis out on the jobs the work and revenue slowly decreased to the point that he and Cindy are now in dire financial straits. He is working on conquering the Social Security disability maze but it is slow going. Cindy has stepped up to help but last year finished her long standing job at Wooden Soldier when it closed its doors.  Because of her age, blindness in one eye from a years-ago spider bite, and lack of transportation, she is basically unemployable. Like all Mt Washington Valley natives, Curtis has an innate fierce pride and is too humble to ask for help.

Your contribution, however small, will help him get back on his feet both financially and spiritually. All contributions will be used to pay back real estate and other taxes and outstanding house and medical bills and give him and Cindy time to figure out the government systems. Every little bit helps! Please consider donating whatever you can.
