A few months ago, Curt Mercer — our longtime cook and friend — was severely injured in a random act of violence.

It’s still hard to wrap our heads around. Someone as kind, gentle, and good as Curt — caught in something so senseless. But what has followed has been nothing short of incredible: Curt’s strength, courage, and quiet determination during recovery have inspired all of us at The Som and beyond.

Curt has been a part of The Som for years — not just in the kitchen, but in our hearts. If you’ve ever eaten one of his meals, worked alongside him, or just shared a moment of his calming presence, you know the kind of man he is.

Now, we’re coming together to support him the way he’s supported us — with care, community, and love.

All funds raised will go directly to Curt and his family to help cover medical bills, rehabilitation costs, and lost income during his recovery.

We’re also hosting a Benefit for Curt on Friday, August 23 at The Som in Burlington, Iowa. Join us in person for food, silent auction, and the kind of community support that shows just how much good still exists.
