Our family is facing an unimaginable challenge. Carter, a happy, smiley baby who is just 7 months old, has recently been diagnosed with neuroblastoma, a childhood cancer.

A few weeks ago, Carter wasn’t feeling well after having COVID. His mom, Olivia, noticed that his stomach appeared distended and felt something unusual. Trusting her instincts, she brought this to the doctor’s attention. An ultrasound was ordered, and it revealed a mass. Carter was quickly referred to Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital, where doctors confirmed a mass about the size of half a tennis ball on his adrenal gland.

Further testing has been devastating. A recent scan showed that the cancer has spread to his skull and femur. Bone marrow biopsies have been performed, and a biopsy of the mass itself was completed this past week. While the family is still waiting on the final pathology report, Carter is expected to begin chemotherapy very soon. In the coming days, he will undergo port placement and an echocardiogram as part of his treatment plan.

Despite everything, doctors are hopeful that Carter can make a strong recovery, especially given how young he is. He continues to be the happiest baby, bringing smiles to everyone around him—even in the hardest moments.
