In early April I was diagnosed with Cushing’s Syndrome , a serious medical condition that’s caused by exposure to high levels of cortisol in the body for long periods of time. Cortisol is the body’s stress hormone, and affects and controls the body’s processes in relation to metabolism and the immune system. I have bilateral primary adrenal disease which means I have cysts on both adrenal glands and I am currently producing 6 times the amount of cortisol than an average person. After months of testing I was sent to Minnesota to see a specialist at the Mayo Clinic where I was told that I need to have both adrenal glands removed in order to live a normal life again. If I don’t get this surgery I will deal with these progressive symptoms until my body deteriorates which can be life threatening. Symptoms have been very serious and have progressed quickly, so surgery is not optional and needs to happen ASAP. Recovery time is up to a year. I have been out of work since April, working a temp position a few days each month which I won’t be able to do once I have surgery in early August. My parents have been supporting me financially since this time and after turning 26 in April (coincidentally) I am no longer insured so they’ve been paying out of pocket for my medical expenses. This has been incredibly expensive and has been a huge burden on myself and my family. I’ve always been able to support myself and hate asking for anything but I’m currently unable to do anything physically and mentally until I get through this long process. Anyone who knows me understands my independence and always being able to take care of myself was a part of my identity and this disease has taken that from me. I’m even unable to do average daily tasks that have been taken for granted. I guess what I’m asking is for a little help. Help to make it through this, so I can be healthy and be myself again.
Thank you to all who have been so supportive, positive and encouraging. Much love !
