My name is James and I have a 12 year old orange cat named Dorito. I've had and loved animals my entire life and I've had Dorito since he was 8 weeks old - he's been my little pal ever since.
I've been lucky enough for Dorito to have no major health issues - until recently. About a month and a half ago he began avoiding jumping up to his favorite places, moving oddly and even stumbling and falling down. He's always been a spry, curious cat so it was troubling to see him like this. Despite an online vet suggesting some homeopathic products for ear or sinus infections I took Dorito to the vet ASAP where an examination and blood tests diagnosed him with FIP.
FIP, Feline Infectious Peritonitis (FIP) is a severe, often fatal immune-mediated disease in cats caused by a mutation of the common feline coronavirus. It has different variations including Wet, Dry and Neurological. Dorito was diagnosed with Dry Neurological. While a few years ago this was essentially a death sentence for cats an anti-viral medication, GS-441524, has been developed and shows to have very high cure rates.
The medication requires a 12-week course and then observation afterwards to be effective and determine if it is cured. The cost unfortunately is a problem. Each 30ml vial costs near $300.00 and we are on day 33 of 84 and on our third vial. I have been charging the cost for now as this was unexpected and will continue to do so to cure him but I am seeking any kind of assistance to help mitigate the costs and accrued debt.
If anything - enjoy the pictures of my best friend :)
