Life-Saving Heart Surgery for a Puppy Mill Survivor

Carl’s life didn’t start with love. He began as a puppy mill/pet store surrender—just another number in a system that didn't care about his health. Thankfully, he was rescued by the amazing team at Little Red Barn Dog Rescue in Rice Lake, WI, which eventually led him to us.

He is a vibrant, sweet, 19 week old Mini Aussie who finally knows what a real home feels like. But we just received news that could cut his new life tragically short.

The Diagnosis: PDA (Patent Ductus Arteriosus)

We took Carl for an echocardiogram, hoping for the best, but the results were serious. Carl has PDA, a heart defect that is putting immense strain on his body. Patent Ductus Arteriosus (PDA) in dogs is a congenital heart defect where a fetal blood vessel, the ductus arteriosus, fails to close at birth, causing blood to overload the lungs and heart. It commonly causes a distinct "washing machine" murmur, fatigue, coughing, and stunted growth. Without surgery it is typically fatal, but early treatment usually allows a normal life. The scan also showed that his little heart is already enlarged from the stress of trying to keep up.

The Reality

The Clock is Ticking: Without surgery, Carl has weeks to months to live. There is no way to know how long and with no medication that can fix this; his heart will eventually fail.

The Hope: PDA is one of the few heart conditions that can be cured with surgery. If we can get him this procedure, Carl will have a chance at living a normal, full life.

The Obstacle: Because this is a complex specialty surgery, the quotes from three different providers have all averaged out to around $7,000.
