Cullis Family Stroke Recovery

Donation protected
I’m setting up this GoFundMe to provide friends and family with a way to help my father and his family in their current situation. I never thought that I would have to set something like this up, but I think that there are a lot of people out there who would like to help their family but don’t know what to do.

My father lives on Salt Spring Island in British Columbia, Canada, with his wife, Lorraine, and two children, Jessi and Jayda. Lorraine recently suffered from a massive stroke, and their family is trying to cope with the situation emotionally and financially.

Last week, Lorraine, came home from picking up my little sister, Jayda, from school. When they got home, Jayda noticed that Lorraine was not looking well and that something was wrong. Lorraine then vomited and passed out.  Jayda alerted my father, who was at home, and they called 911 and got her to the hospital right away. Unfortunately, the medical personnel in the emergency room were so focused on the fact that she had thrown up, they missed what the true, life altering, and possibly life threatening reality was. Lorraine, had suffered a stroke. It was not until there was a change in doctors the following morning, many hours later, that they realized what had happened and were able to properly diagnose the stroke.

Because they live on an island, and the hospital there did not have the technology needed to properly deal with her condition, they were rushed onto an ambulance with a red priority tag to be seen in a larger hospital in Victoria, British Columbia. Once they arrived in Victoria and checked into the emergency room, they were forced to wait in line. The wait lasted for an excruciating five hours before a doctor saw them. They were finally able to get a CAT scan, which allowed the doctors to see what the extent of the damage from the stroke was. It turned out that the stroke was very serious, and the effects of the stroke are still evolving.

Lorraine is a fighter and has made improvements in the last week. She is expected to be in the hospital for at least a month. She is talking, and memories are slowly starting to come back. She recognizes everyone in the family, which we see as a huge blessing. We do not really know what timelines to expect, or even what type of recovery we hope to expect.

While Lorraine is making improvements, their family is now in a difficult financial situation. Lorraine is 60+ years old and was working full time at the local pharmacy in order to support her family. Because Lorraine is over 60 years old, she is not entitled to any disability income. Without Lorraine working, and while paying extra expenses related to Lorraine’s long-term hospital care in Victoria, including ferry rides over to visit her, the family is now struggling to make ends meet. Instead of sending flowers or cards, I thought that it would be the most helpful for family and friends to send whatever they can through this GoFundMe. Anything will help. Thank you so much for your thoughts, prayers, and any donations you can offer.
